Information Systems Engineering

The Advanced Diploma in Science cum BS Degree (Information Systems Engineering) course aims to provide students with greater depth of knowledge and practical skills in the field of software engineering and networking communications.

As our daily lives are heavily dependent on computer systems, it is important to have systems that are reliable and safe especially when they are used in safety-critical situations such as industrial plants, financial institutions and health-care areas. Due to these needs, the course is designed to equip students with software engineering practice and project management skills and knowledge. Some of the specialised areas covered in this course are network communications, software project management, distributed computer systems and operating systems. Students in this course will be provided with industry-relevant knowledge and skills such as networking, Java, Macromedia Flash, ActionScript, ASP.Net (C#), UML (Rational XDE), Linux, Oracle, socket programming and web services. In addition, the Cisco CCNA curriculum is incorporated into this course.

With the opportunity for students to go for six months industrial training, students will be exposed to real-life industrial problems, which will be both challenging and rewarding in terms of the invaluable experience that they will gain. Students are trained to improve their problem solving skills so that they would be able to blend into the workforce easily.

   Academic and Professional Progression

Graduates have been accepted into postgraduate studies in many universities.

The Advanced Diploma in Science (Information Systems Engineering) is recognised as suitable for progression to a Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) or Liverpool John Moores University (JMU), UK degree with prior credit. Advanced Diploma graduates of this programme can obtain the BSc (Hons) Information Technology or BSc (Hons) Information Technology (Computer Systems & Networks or Software Engineering) Degree from SHU or BSc (Hons) Computing and Information Systems Degree from JMU by completing the final semester of the programme at the respective university.

   Career Prospects

Advanced Diploma cum BS Degree graduates may be employed as analyst programmers, software developers, systems analysts, software testers, systems designers, software trainers, consultants, computer systems engineers, application engineers, technical engineers, technical writers and so on.

Career prospects are good for graduates of this course as they can find employment in a wide range of industries such as software and systems consulting firms, software houses, network communications, computer vendors as well as end-user environments for example, banking, manufacturing, insurance and so on.
