| Chemistry and Biology |
This diploma course aims to produce
chemistry and biology graduates at the sub-professional
level. The course equips
students with the necessary basic knowledge
of scientific concepts and theoretical
principles to understand chemical and
biological phenomena and processes, and
trains students to perform standard chemical
and biological laboratory procedures. |
The Chemistry and Biology course covers
both the practical and theoretical aspects of
the subjects. The chemistry syllabi provide a
detailed coverage of various topics including
atomic and molecular structures, properties
of matter, properties and reactions of
elements and compounds, analytical
techniques and industrial products. The
biology syllabi cover a broad spectrum of
topics which include cells, energetics,
homeostasis and excretion, reproduction and
development. The course largely
emphasises the application of chemical
principles in control of the living environment. |

| Academic and Professional Progression |
| The standard
of the Diploma in Science
(Chemistry and Biology) is equivalent to the 1st
year of a relevant Bachelor Degree. Graduates
can further their studies to: |

Advanced Diploma
in Science cum BS Degree (Junior & Senior Years) (Chemistry and
Biology) at TAR College. |
| b) |
Relevant Bachelor (Honours)
Degree courses at Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) or other
universities on advanced standing / credit transfer. |
| Career Prospects |
| Graduates of Diploma in Science majoring
in Chemistry and Biology may be
employed as quality controllers, technical assistants and laboratory
supervisors in
manufacturing industries or medical establishments. Job vacancies
are also available
for them to be employed as sales executives in commercial companies. |

| Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) as follows:- | ||
| (i) | 5 credits which must include Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology | |
| (ii) | Pass in English Language | |
| II | Diploma in Science (Chemistry and Biology) - Admission on advanced standing to Semester 4 | |
| Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM)/A Levels with Principal passes in Chemistry and Biology | ||
| Plus | ||
| Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) as follows:- | ||
| (i) | 3 credits in Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology | |
| (ii) | Pass in English Language | |
| A principal or subsidiary pass at STPM level is
acceptable in lieu of a credit for the corresponding
SPM subject. |

Applicants who only have a
pass in SPM Bahasa Malaysia will be required to obtain a credit
in SPM Bahasa Malaysia or equivalent before the award of Diploma. |

|
A pass in the English Language
(1119 Level) course conducted by the Extra-Mural Studies Department
(EMSD) is recognised as satisfying the English Language requirement
for admission to the Diploma course. |
