Experiential Learning for Pre-U Students - A Study Trip to FRIM
Date: 28th February 2009

A group of 60 Science & Mathematics Society (SMS) members and two teacher advisors rejoiced with nature as they visited the Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM).

Members were given the opportunity to witness the diversity of our rainforest by experiencing the flora and fauna, first hand. Members, too, were able to enjoy a scenic view upon the canopy walkway and observed the canopy layer of the forest. In depth explanations were delivered by the guide on various issues relating to the uses, characteristics and identification of the plants. On the way down from the canopy walk, members were able to ‘cool down’ by soaking their feet or rinsing their face with the cool water from the waterfall. Some lucky members also had the chance to get bitten by leeches. We concluded the day with a picnic session and a group photo.

In a nutshell, members enjoyed their time there and also learnt of the various benefits of our rainforest.

With the agenda of learning new things, the participants have had their eyes open to the term “Organic”. The students were first led around the farm barefooted as to discharge static electricity accumulated within the body. Then it was followed by an explanation on the process of forming organic compost and the nursery of organic plantlets. It was definitely a trip worthwhile.

SPUS Parent-Lecturer Day 2007
The School of Pre-University Studies' Parent-Lecturer Day is a bi-annual event which epitomizes the School's vision of pastoral care. On this day parents from all walks of life and including those residing out-of-town took the opportunity to get-to-know the lecturers teaching their children and more importantly their children's academic progress. At the end of the session the parents are better able to understand their children's academic progress and the students will have had the opportunity of learning their strengths and weaknesses and thereby take steps to improve themselves. Both lecturers and parents play vital roles in the education of the younger generation.

SSN Medical Factory trip
Medicine, medical sciences, pharmacy are the usual replies when youngsters are asked about their future studies. But, how much do they know of the hard work of those back-room boys behind the scene of all these professions? Enthusiasm and a strong curiosity to know how medical products are made drove 43 Pre-U students to visit the SSN Medical Factory on May 12, 2008.

Students from the Science and Mathematics Society were shown the process of condom making, from raw rubber to the final product using sophisticated machinery followed by flavouring and packaging. They were also brought to the QA testing room to see how condoms were tested, namely testing leakage, stress and heat on a randomly picked pack of condoms.

Although the students had to endure the pungent smell of ammonia gas during the initial part of the tour, they were willing to bear with it and thus appreciating the work of these back-room boys.
