Welcome to the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing (FASC) of TAR University College!!

FASC is evolved from a well-established and reputable School known as the School of Arts and Science (SAS) of the renowned Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) which has been upgraded to Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in May 2013.  The School (SAS) was established in February 1972 and was one of the pioneers who offer external Degree since 1979. The BS (Campbell University) Degree offered at TAR UC has gained its 3rd 10-year of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC) in 2011. The Faculty has a track record of producing successful graduates in both academic and industry in a wide and diverse range of applied sciences and computing areas for more than 40 years. To date, the faculty has more than 150 faculty members and has graduated more than 37,000 graduates at various level of studies.

The Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing (FASC) currently runs programmes at Diploma and Bachelor (Honours) Degree levels and endeavors to offer Masters and PhD programmes in the near future. The Faculty continues the academic collaboration arrangement with the Campbell University, USA to offer external Degree to the students. In this academic arrangement, the programme structures and syllabi of FASC programmes are so designed and arranged that students will be simultaneously prepared for the programme in FASC in conjunction with the Bachelor of Science (BS) degree of Campbell University , Buies Creek, North Carolina, USA.

Apart from running academic programmes, the faculty is active in research activities and provides sample testing using high-end scientific and industrial-standard instrumentation. The faculty has close relationship with industry, and was award as “Industry Center of Excellent (iCOE) in ICT cluster” in 2013 by MOHE, one of “The Most Engaged IHL Industry Academia Collaboration 2012” byMDeC, “IBM Center of Excellence 2011 for software” by IBM, and “the best Cisco Networking Academy 2011 and 2012”.

Campbell University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC) to award Associate, Bachelor's, Master's, Education Specialist, and Doctorate degrees. This accreditation extends to all of the University's program sites, including its Bachelor of Science degree at Tunku Abdul Rahman University College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Department of BioScience and Sport Science

The Department of Bioscience and Sport Science in the FASC is offering programmes with the objective to produce graduates who are equipped with a broad-based yet in depth knowledge and skills in the areas of BioScience, Food Science and Sports & Exercise Science.

BioScience programme is designed with the objective to produce graduates who receive broad and in depth training in the core areas of bioscience, with additional emphasis in the area of chemistry, thus, preparing graduates with a strong foundation for a career at the interface of biology and chemistry to meet the growing demand of knowledge-based workforce. The programme contains a diversity of courses deemed necessary to meet the desired competencies. Emphasis is placed in the areas of biological sciences with biotechnology, which integrates biological sciences with biochemical engineering to provide training for the modern biotechnology industry. Students will be trained and acquire theoretical and practical knowledge grounding in areas such as recombinant DNA, the genomic technologies, genetics, synthetic and chemical biology and bio-nanotechnology. A range of knowledge on subjects as diverse as cell, molecular and developmental biology, biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, physiology and environmental biology is covered.  Emphasis is also placed in the area of chemistry. Students will involve in the development of tools and methods to measure physical properties of substances and apply those techniques for both qualitative and quantitative analysis in a wide variety of settings. Emphasis will be placed on polymer chemistry, environmental chemistry and technology, industrial organic chemistry, and instrumental methods of chemical analysis.

Food Science programme aims to produce graduates who are equipped with the scientific knowledge and skills of the food chain and forms a link for those who wish to embark on a career in a variety of professional and technical fields in the dynamic food and nutrition industries. The programme is grounded in basic sciences in relation to the study of food science while extending the application to areas as food chemistry, food microbiology, food technology and food nutrition.

Sports and Exercise Science programme aims to produce graduates who are equipped with a broad-based knowledge and skills in the areas of Sport and Exercise Science. Emphasis will be placed on exercise physiology, kinesiology, sport biomechanics and sports methodologies. The first year lays the foundations for understanding basic concepts, methods and theories in sport and exercise sciences. In the second and third year the courses cover core areas of sport and exercise science and offer the opportunity for students to develop their practical and research skills though project and laboratory work.

 

Department of Computer Science and Mathematics

The Department of Computer Science and Mathematics offers programmes with the objective to develop and cultivate students’ potential in the area of Interactive Software Technology, Software Engineering and Mathematics for relevant domain knowledge.
The programmes offered under the Department of Computer Science and Mathematics are:

  1. Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Interactive Software Technology
  2. Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Software Engineering
  3. Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Management Mathematics with Computing

Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Interactive Software Technology provides students with technical knowledge and hands-on experience in computer science with a further focus on the design and development of interactive software that can be used in mobile applications, video games, flight simulators, virtual reality, electronic magazines, educational and training materials.

Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) in Software Engineering covers concepts and practical aspects of systems analysis and design, software engineering, software construction, software quality assurance and testing, software requirement engineering, human computer interaction, artificial intelligence and software development to develop, manage and maintain high-quality software in a systematic, controlled and efficient manner.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Management Mathematics with Computing is a multi-disciplinary blend with Management Mathematics as the major and Computing as the minor covering discrete mathematics, probability and statistics, calculus, operations research, quality control, numerical methods, mathematical and statistical software, IT fundamentals,  programming,  database, operating systems and data structures and algorithms. This programme provides students an added advantage of gaining strong foundation in mathematics and computing to work in the various industries that requires talent to solve many real life complex problems.

Overall, these programmes will prepare students to apply their knowledge of computer science and mathematics, problem-solving skills and analytical skills during their everyday work in future.

 

Department of Information and Communication Technologies

The Department of Information and Communication Technologies offers various programmes specialized in wide spectrum of information technology, information systems and communication technology. The programmes offered are :

Enterprise Information Systems. This programme combines information technology knowledge, business processes fundamentals, and project management competencies. The main objective is to produce computing graduates who can help organisations reduce costs, increase productivity and competitive advantage through creative technological applications. The courses offered include: analysis and design, business and IT fundamentals, information systems, enterprise resource planning, business processes and management, databases, programming techniques, data warehouse, business intelligence and project management.

Internet Technology.  Our programme will give students a deep understanding of the fundamentals of Internet technology and computer-based systems. Internet technology supports various business processes of an organisation. Companies are now above to exploit Internet technology by forming value networks where they conduct electronic commerce and exchanging goods and services with other organisations globally. The full spectrum of Internet technology courses offered include: IT fundaments, electronic commerce, analysis and design, web design and development, web services and engineering, mobile computing, human computer interaction, computer networks and Internet security.

Software Systems Development. Computers and computing devices are now very much part of our daily lives. Many people use them but few have the knowledge and skills to design and construct the systems we have become dependent on. The objective of this programme is to produce computing graduates who are equipped with deep knowledge and skills in constructing computer-based systems and networks to help companies to be successful. The courses offered include : analysis and design, programming, algorithms, architecture and organization, human computer interaction, database management, computer networking, operating systems, agile software development and software project management. 

Information Security. Employees with knowledge of information security are now considered to be an important part of information technology teams. Our objective is to produce graduates with both the management and technical aspects of information security. Computer security threats affect nearly every company and organization. The skills gained are therefore valuable in today's digital marketplace. As a consequence, information security professionals are in high demand. The courses offered include: IT fundamentals, programming,  networking technologies, information assurance and security, database management, network security, software security, security assessment and risk management, OS security and digital forensics

One other unique feature of all the above programmes is that industry-relevant skills are included in the curriculum as a result of close collaboration with the industries like Microsoft, IBM, CISCO, Novell, SAP and Google, to name a few.


Department of Physical Science

The Department of Physical Sciences offers programmes with the aim to produce graduates equipped with a wide scope yet comprehensive knowledge and skills in the areas of Chemistry, Physics and Microelectronics. The current programmes offered by the Department of Physical Sciences are the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Analytical Chemistry, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Physics with Scientific Instrumentation, and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Microelectronics with Embedded Technology.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Analytical Chemistry programme provides students with a thorough background in analytical chemistry with a strong emphasis on instrumentation and the development of a variety of important analytical skills. This programme focuses on giving hands-on experience to students on some of the major analytical instruments and techniques for testing samples from a wide range of sources and equips graduates with a broad solid foundation in Chemistry. Graduates of analytical chemistry programme  can seek employment in quality control laboratories,   production,   pharmaceutical industry, water purification industry, wastewater management industry, forensic science, process design and product development, instrumental design industry, research and development just to name a few.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Physics with Scientific Instrumentation programme equips graduates with the knowledge in physics and instrumentation, and operational technical skill, which would lay the foundation for applications in various industrial areas. Students will go through training in the applications of physics and instrumentations, computer simulations, designing virtual instruments using Labview, and handling advanced equipments such as thermal evaporator and atomic force microscope. This programme would also established fundamental knowledge for future applied physics innovators in the areas of material sciences, instrumentations biomedical and healthcare equipment designs.

The Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Microelectronics with Embedded Technology programme has been designed to train students in analogue and digital electronics, application specific IC (ASIC), field programmable array (FPGA) and IC design using current professional tools. To complement the microelectronics content of the programme, students are also trained in embedded systems design using current microcontrollers (ARM / PIC) as well as real time operating systems (RTOS) with emphasis on efficient programming techniques. Graduates will be sought after by design houses / companies in IC design and fabrication, automation, robotics, identification and monitoring, test and measurement, and consumer electronics.
