Bachelor Degree

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Material

An in-depth understanding on the nature of materials will make you a better engineer and designer because materials are considered as the heart of all branches of engineering. Nearly everything we use is made of materials and essentially every technology depends on breakthroughs in materials science and engineering, for instance, the development of semiconducting polymers is one of the contributing factors that has led to the production of  light emitting diodes (LEDs). Any engineer can search for materials properties from a database  or book, but ability to innovate and to incorporate materials safely in design required in-depth  understanding on the materials structures, properties and processing techniques. This programme is specially designed to meet the vast demand of industries. Graduates are  also equipped with the knowledge on manufacturing & management which are essential for  their future employment.

Programme:
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Material (4 Years)

Career Prospects:
There are excellent career opportunities for Materials Engineering graduates in many fields.  Graduates are employed in a wide range of industries such as iron & steels, petrochemicals,  electronics, ceramics, polymers and composites as Metallurgical Engineers, Field/Technical Service Engineers, Plant Engineers, R & D Engineers, Materials Engineers, Corrosion Engineers, QA/QC Engineers and Sales & Service Engineers.

This programme is designed to produce and develop graduates:

  1. Graduates are competent in the practice of Materials Engineering.
  2. Graduates are engaged in lifelong learning and professional development.
  3. Graduates are committed to professionalism in engineering practices and contribute to the society.

Upon completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals and material engineering to the solution of complex engineering problems related to material and manufacturing engineering.
  2. Identify, formulate, research literature and analyse complex engineering problems related to material and manufacturing engineering.
  3. Design solutions, systems, components or processes related to materials engineering with appropriate consideration to public health, safety, cultural, societal and environmental issues.
  4. Conduct investigation into material and manufacturing related problems using research based knowledge and research methods.
  5. Create, select and apply appropriate techniques, resources, modern engineering and IT tools for materials engineering activities, with an understanding of the limitations.
  6. Apply contextual knowledge to access societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and also the consequent responsibilities relevant to professional material and manufacturing engineering practice.
  7. Demonstrate an understanding on the impact of professional materials engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts and also demonstrate knowledge of and need of sustainable development.
  8. Apply ethical principles and committed to the professional and ethical responsibilities of Materials Engineer.
  9. Communicate effectively in both oral and written forms not only to engineers but also to the community at large.
  10. Apply entrepreneur, managerial, technical and interpersonal skills to work effectively at individual or organisation levels with the capacity of a leader.
  11. Recognise the need and demonstrate ability to acquire new knowledge through life-long learning.
  12. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of engineering and management principles and apply these to manage projects in multi-disciplinary environments.
