TAR UC via the Centre for Pre-University Studies ('CPUS') organised the third edition of its annual Mathematics and Science Quiz on 20 May 2017, with the quiz running concurrently at its Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Perak, Johor, and Sabah campuses. In conjunction with the 60th Merdeka celebrations, the quiz was aptly named the 'National M@S Merdeka Challenge 2017'.
As many as 905 Form 5 students from 64 schools participated in the nationwide competition. The competition this year had two categories namely the Team category and Individual category. The quiz is part of TAR UC's endeavour to stimulate interest in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields among secondary school students, and to support the STEM initiative as promulgated in the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2013-2025. This is in line with Malaysia?s aspiration to become a developed nation with a STEM-driven economy.
The competition was divided into two rounds. In the paper-based preliminary round, all participants were required to answer multiple choice questions which cover the SPM Form 4 Additional Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects in 45 minutes. The top ten teams and top ten individual participants with the highest scores will proceed to the final round.
The final round was a computer-based quiz and the finalists were required to answer multiple choice questions taken from SPM Form 4 Additional Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry subjects within 30 minutes.
In Kuala Lumpur Main Campus, SMJK Katholik PJ was named as the top team in the Team category, winning a cash prize of RM1,200. In the Individual category, Takeda Shigenori, a student from Chong Hwa Independent won RM300 in cash for emerging as the Champion.
