The recent Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (‘FOCS’) Symposium held on 17 January 2018 at TAR UC gave a brief glimpse into the future through the students’ ICT innovations and solutions to everyday life.

A joint effort between FOCS and the Computer Science Society (‘CSS’), the symposium titled “Internet of Things (‘IoT’): Driving Innovation” centred around two  focuses namely the IoT Forum and Project Showcase with the goal of stimulating interest in IoT innovations and shaping IoT adoption challenges into opportunities for the students.

The IoT Forum entitled “IoT Nation and Plans” featured three keynote speakers who are all leading experts in the ICT technology industry, highlighting the possible areas of development in the near future in order to help students understand the landscape of the industry and encourage innovative ideas which can potentially give birth to new entrepreneurial ventures.

In the Project Showcase session, FOCS students demonstrated their respective ideas and designs of current and future technologies related to IoT and its application into daily aspects of  human lives, including concepts which are related to TAR UC’s Smart Campus plan such as a car-pooling system, campus communal chat system, and drone applications in a Smart Campus setting.

“I have always encouraged our students to step up and showcase their unique talents and innovative ideas, and this symposium is the perfect platform for that. I have seen some very promising concepts and I am looking forward to seeing more of these innovations especially those which are in line with TAR UC’s key strategic plan to create a Smart Campus in the future,” said Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR UC, who was present to officiate the symposium.

“One of TAR UC’s key pillars is to provide entrepreneurship-focused education. With the birth of iSpark@TARUC and the TARC Incubator, I hope some ideas at the FOCS Symposium can be further developed into a feasible business-ready proposal,” added Datuk Dr Tan.

Ms Lim Mei Shyan, Dean of FOCS said, “The success of last year’s inaugural launch of the Final Year Project Showcase proved that we as educators have to create opportunities and drive our students to become the innovators of tomorrow. We hope this symposium will spark sweeping changes in the future of the IoT industry.”

Apart from the forum and showcase exhibition, the FOCS Symposium also invited TAR UC alumnus Mr Ginz Ooi, founder and CEO of Webqlo Sdn Bhd to share his experience as an entrepreneur in the ICT industry.
