TAR UC extends its winning streak with the win in the National University Robotics Competition (‘NURC’). Loh Wooi Kiang, Ng Theng Yuen, Lim Jor Yau and Chia Soon Yang who are students of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electrical and Electronic programme took the champion title in the competition which was organised by Sasbadi Holdings Berhad, the national partner of the World Robot Olympiad (‘WRO’) in Malaysia. The competition was held on 3 September 2016 in a private higher learning institution in Kuala Lumpur.

This annual competition which aims to promote Science and Technology among university students saw the participation of approximately 15 institutions of higher learning. The theme for this year’s competition was Robot Bowling where the participating teams were challenged to make a robot that could score as many points as possible in a ten-pin bowling game. The task of the robot was to fetch a ball from a ball rack, locate the pins at the end of the lane and to knock as many pins down as possible by rolling the ball towards the pins.

Loh Wooi Kiang related the challenges the team faced during the competition. “As we were required to build a robot with complex functions, we found that some of the softwares that were required to build the robot were of advance level. Besides this, we were also stressed out due to the limited time given to build the robot.” “However, I strongly believe that the knowledge we have acquired in TAR UC was the reason for our win. The programming subject that we have learnt in campus not only helped us to build the robot but to ensure that the robot could perform all the required functions spelt out in the competition,” he explained in detail.

Ng Theng Yuen on the other hand was thankful to TAR UC for the valuable lessons and skills he had acquired which were very useful in the competition. “I personally am appreciative of the skills I have developed in TAR UC such as time management, critical thinking and team work. All these skills which I have gained through the many assignments as well as the many practical sessions I had in my courses were very useful for me and the team in the competition,” he added.

The students won for themselves medals and certificates. On top of this, the team of students will be representing Malaysia in the WRO which will take place from 24-28 November 2016 in New Delhi, India.
