This project focuses on the fabrication, characterization and biocompatibility studies of cost-effective core-shell nanoparticles for their use as agents in photo-thermal treatment of skin cancers. The design of the core-shell particles would allow optimized absorption of 1064 nm Infra-red radiation which is relatively non-invasive and a surface coating to bestow good colloidal stability and selective concentration in cancer cells via the well-known enhanced permeability and retention effect. Localized hypothermia of cancer cells is to be achieved via excitation of the agents by IR with minimized side-effect.

Documentation of the occurrence and distribution, characterization (with advanced microscopy and molecular tools) and development of rapid detection system to screen for the presence of fish-killing raphidophyte, Chattonella species in Malaysian coastal waters for harmful algal bloom (HAB) management. Research output may provide useful and critical information to government in HAB mitigation and risk management especially to reduce economical losses in aquaculture industry.
