About Us

Welcome to the Faculty of Built Environment (FOBE).

The Faculty evolved from the School of Technology (SOT) which was set up under Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TARC) in 1972. When TARC was upgraded to be a University College on 2 May 2013, SOT was restructured to become the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FEBE). Upon expansion of FEBE into two faculties on 1 May 2017, the Faculty of Built Environment (FOBE) was formed. 

FOBE has a long standing excellence track records and a team of qualified and experienced academic staff. The Faculty started with Diploma in Technology (Building) and since then has expanded into a comprehensive range of Built Environment programmes at Diploma and Degree levels, particularly in areas of Architecture, Construction Management, Quantity Surveying and Real Estate Management. All the programmes were designed in accordance with the requirements of and/or accredited by the respective Statutory Boards and/or Professional Body, as follows:

1.Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM)

The Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) offers an educational pathway for those who wish to be a Professional Quantity Surveyor and/or Consulting Quantity Surveyor. Graduates with Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) may be registered as Provisional Quantity Surveyor with BQSM.

2.Board of Valuers, Appraisers, Estate Agents and Property Managers Malaysia (BoVAEP)

The Diploma in Real Estate Management [formerly known as Diploma in Technology (Property Management)] offers an educational pathway for those who wish to be a Registered Estate Agent. Graduates with Diploma in Real Estate Management may be given full exemption from BoVAEP’s written examinations and are eligible for registration as a Probationary Estate Agent. Whereas the Bachelor of Real Estate Management (Honours) is for those who wish to be a Registered Valuer and/or Registered Estate Agent and/or Registered Property Manager. Graduates with Bachelor of Real Estate Management (Honours) may be registered as Probationary Valuer or Probationary Estate Agent or Probationary Property Manager with BoVAEP. For graduates who opt to register as a Probationary Valuer with BoVAEP, upon passing their Test of Professional Competence (TPC), they can be Registered Valuer, Registered Estate Agent and Registered Property Manager with BoVAEP.

 3. Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM)

The Diploma in Quantity Surveying [formerly known as Diploma in Technology (Quantity Surveying) is recognised as an approved sub-professional qualification by BQSM. Graduates with Diploma in Quantity Surveying may be given exemption for the Foundation and First Examinations (except Intermediate and Final Examinations) of RISM’s Professional Examinations for Quantity Surveying. Graduates of the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) and the Bachelor of Real Estate Management (Honours) are also eligible to apply as Graduate Members of RISM.

 4. Board of Architects Malaysia (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, LAM)

The Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Honours) and Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours) have received accreditation by the Board of Architects Malaysia (Lembaga Arkitek Malaysia, LAM). With the accreditation, TAR UMT students who have graduated from the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Honours) are recognised by the Board of Architects Malaysia as LAM Part I of the professional programme in architecture. With sufficient relevant working experience, they may subsequently register for their LAM Part II postgraduate architecture studies and upon graduation register with LAM as a Graduate Architect. After fulfilling the relevant working experience in architecture, graduates are eligible to sit for the LAM Part III Professional Examination and upon passing this examination may register with LAM as an Architect. Students who have graduated from the Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours) may register with LAM as a Graduate Interior Designer. With sufficient relevant working experience in interior design, graduates are eligible to sit for the Interior Design Licensure Examination and upon passing this examination may register with LAM as an Interior Designer.

 5. Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), UK

The Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics (Honours) and Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) programmes are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), UK.

6. Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), UK

The Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics (Honours), the Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) and the Bachelor of Real Estate Management (Honours) programmes are accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), UK.

FOBE is committed to provide high quality education with strong technical skills, ethical and professionalism values which meet the industry needs both locally and overseas. The Faculty has extensive links with industry and/or Professional/Statutory Bodies to ensure all the programmes are industry relevant at all times. FOBE aims to produce knowledgeable graduates in the pursuit of post-graduate studies and/or professional qualifications and excel in their profession with integrity, professional ethics and be a contribution to society.
