Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours)

The Bachelor of Interior Architecture (Honours) is a 3½ years programme focusing on the design of architectural interiors with emphasis on sustainability, materiality, lighting and acoustics as well as the social and cultural aspects of habitable space. In addition, the programme concentrates on developing skills for designing adaptive re-use spaces and interior spaces with specific functions including various institutional, commercial, residential and mixed-used buildings. Opportunities to gain practical work experience are provided as an integral part of the programme, which include placements within a wide range of interior design and architectural practices.

The Interior Architecture degree programme offers a comprehensive interior design curriculum that provides students with a range of creative and technical skills, preparing them for a career in Interior Design and for opportunities further afield. Jobs directly relevant to the degree include interior designer, exhibition designer, furniture designer and lighting consultant.

This programme is designed to produce and develop graduates:

  1. Who are well grounded with requisite knowledge and skills in creative interior design work, coupled with sound building technological practices required for interior design project realisation.
  2. With technical and leadership skills in planning, coordination and implementation of interior design projects from inception to completion within the architectural and constructional environment.
  3. Who are creative and competent in resolving issues pertaining to interior design and its associated interdisciplinary matters with independence of thought and decision making capabilities.
  4. With interpersonal and communication skills that are vital for teamwork within the various built environment professions and construction teams to enable them to work effectively either independently or as a member of a team.
  5. With firmly grounded professional ethics and right attitude that will gear them towards higher professional and academic qualifications in the field of interior design.
  6. Who will endeavour to establish entrepreneurial skills to successfully run and manage their own firm/company in a professional manner; and thereby inculcating lifelong learning.

Upon completion of the programme, the graduates should be able to:

  1. Apply essential design and technical knowledge with creative skills to achieve the objectives and goals of a successful interior architectural work.
  2. Apply manual, digital and model making skills in the preparation of design drawings and materials for project realization targeting relevant current presentation media.
  3. Apply analytical and critical thinking skills to define and develop integrated design, creatively through innovative and alternative practices for continuous improvements in the field of interior architecture.
  4. Communicate effectively in written/graphical and oral forms, with and without the use of ICT tools for productive discussions and negotiations.
  5. Apply interpersonal skills in management, work independently and effectively as a member of an interactive team in the building industry.
  6. Practise strong professional ethical values in their work in line with principles and practices pertinent to the implementation of interior design processes and marketing operations.
  7. Use information resource for reflective evaluation through the acquisition of new skills to achieve a higher level of study for career development and thereby inculcating life-long learning.
  8. Demonstrate good management and entrepreneurship skills through an understanding of regulatory and contractual procedures in order to carry out effective interior design practice and marketing operations.
  9. Apply leadership skills in managing interior design processes, implementation of design projects and in the running of the interior architectural firm.
