TAR UC students from the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business (FAFB) notched up notable victories at the recent MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2019 when they won an array of awards in a number of categories.

The MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2019, which ran from 12 to 16 November 2019 and was jointly organised by Malaysian Institute of Certified Public Accountants (MICPA) and Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), is an annual event that allows for accounting students from all over the country to meet and interact with each other. It aims to promote accounting as a career, providing an opportunity for students to learn more about the profession.

A range of activities and competitions were held as part of MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week 2019, including Accounting Student Quizzes (for Degree and Diploma levels), a Business Strategy Challenge comprising a Management Simulation Game, a Sports and Games competition, and an exclusive networking session for top accounting undergraduates.

In the Accounting Student Quizzes, contestants went through a multiple-choice written quiz and an oral quiz, and the team that scored the highest cumulative aggregate points was named the overall winner. Meanwhile, in the Business Strategy Challenge - Management Simulation Game, each competing team took on the simulated challenge of managing a manufacturing company and selling their products on the market. Contestants were judged on their production, marketing and finance decisions.

“The most notable challenge for me in this competition was during the final round, as the questions did not come with multiple-choice options,” said Cheng Yuan, who hailed from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sri Sentosa. “I am very grateful to my teammates, Mun Sin and Xue Ching, as we worked together closely to come up with the answers. They have encouraged me to have more confidence when answering. Teamwork is the reason for our achievement.”

“Unlike the other competitions which emphasised presentation skills and business acumen, the accounting quiz required strong grasp of technical knowledge which we have learnt in our syllabus, covering subjects like accounting, audit, taxation and law,” Cheng Yuan explained, when asked about how this competition differed from the ones that she previously participated in.  “The management simulation game provided us with an insight on the managerial decision-making process by making us consider a wide range of factors which are potentially conflicting. Our team had to come out with a balanced decision that sufficiently addressed all areas . The nature and structure of the competition was very interesting and eye-opening!”

“Our experience in TAR UC has definitely helped my team in this competition,” said Jia Ming, who was from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Cheras. “We have benefitted from the valuable lessons that the lecturers taught and we have also picked up useful knowledge from the journals and newspapers in the library. We are grateful for what we have learnt in TAR UC."

Both students have some words of advice for their peers who are looking to replicate their success.

“It’s either now or never, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone since you’ll never know what you can achieve!” Cheng Yuan said, while Jia Ming declared that “Hard work is the key for anyone to succeed, since Rome was not built in a day. When you put in your maximum effort today, it will definitely pay off in the future!”
