First Prize for TARCian's Final Year Project

TAR UMT graduate Chng Sook Ling signed off her student life chapter in style after her Final Year Project (FYP) won First Prize in the Tan Sri Ir Yusoff Ibrahim Best FYP Competition 2022 that concluded on 22 November 2022.

The event, jointly organised by the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), saw a total of 62 submissions from across the nation vying for the top prize.

Sook Ling's FYP 'Cu-Gr-TiO2 Ternary Nanocomposite for The Application of Anticorrosion Coating: Synthesis, Characterization and Anticorrosion Properties', which aims to develop a novel ternary nanocomposite coating consisting of copper (Cu), graphene (Gr), and titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles with enhanced anticorrosive properties on mild steel using a simple one-step electrodeposition method, impressed the judging panel enough to earn her the First Prize award.

“Incorporation of graphene and titanium dioxide nanoparticles into a copper metallic coating could enhance its barrier performance against corrosion. This project not only provided me with a better understanding of how nanocomposites improve anticorrosion properties, but the results obtained in this project are intended to be beneficial in future research projects involving metal anticorrosion engineering, serving as a reference in the research community,” explained Sook Ling.

Graduated after completing her Bachelor of Materials Engineering (Hons), the result genuinely surprised Sook Ling.

"There were so many other amazing and talented participants so the result really exceeded my expectations and boosted my confidence in my own paper. I am incredibly honoured to receive the award. On top of that I want to express my deepest appreciation to my lecturer and project supervisor Ts Dr Ho Mui Yen for her support and guidance throughout the one-year period it took for me to complete this paper," said Sook Ling.

Currently working as a quality assurance executive, Sook Ling was thankful for choosing TAR UMT, adding: "TAR UMT has provided me with a great opportunity to gain technical knowledge and skills that are needed to succeed and has exceptionally prepared me for a smooth transition from university to the professional work I am doing today."
