In a surprising and exceptional feat, TAR UC together with its two graduates were feted at the recent Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (“CIMA”) Excellence Awards Virtual Ceremony held on 10 December 2021 with triple recognition for their respective outstanding achievement. Two of its graduates emerged as top students in the Strategic Case Study paper for the November 2020 and February 2021 examinations. By virtue of the students’ excellent performance, TAR UC was awarded the Regional High Distinction (Asia Pacific) at the CIMA Academic Partner Excellence Awards.

The said two top graduates from TAR UC are Cheong Mun Hei and Angel Quek Chen Chen who completed their Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) at TAR UC in 2019 and 2018 respectively. Mun Hei aced the Strategic Case Study paper in the November 2020 examination while Angel Quek scored top mark for the same paper in the February 2021 examination.

Currently working in a Fintech company based in Kuala Lumpur, Mun Hei shared the challenges he faced in preparation for the CIMA examination. “Time management was the biggest challenge for me as I pursued the paper when I just started working. Juggling between work and studies is no easy task. However, having spent a few years in TAR UC, I have learnt time management skill. I picked up this skill while juggling various assignments, classes, tutorials and extra-curricular activities on campus and the experience has turned into a habit which continues to help me even after I have graduated. As for my preparation for the examination, I ensured I understood the concepts and facts. Then, I gave myself a lot of practice in answering past year questions. This way, I was able to produce the answers based on my understanding and not based on how much I could memorise. What I have studied in my degree at TAR UC has given me a solid foundation. This is why I am very happy that my result has contributed to TAR UC’s recognition as Regional High Distinction (Asia Pacific) awarded by CIMA,” Mun Hei explained.

Meanwhile, Angel Quek is currently working in Singapore. She was overjoyed for having contributed towards TAR UC being awarded the recognition by CIMA. “The Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) programme at TAR UC is well-known for producing well-rounded graduates in the areas of accountancy and finance. When I graduated, I knew I was not walking out of TAR UC with just a paper qualification but also with a solid foundation which would help me propel my career. For this, I am very grateful to TAR UC and to know that my result contributed to TAR UC being recognised by CIMA is indeed joyful. I am also grateful for the intensive lessons TAR UC provided in preparation for the examination. The tutors were of great help in guiding students on how to answer the examination questions. On top of that, my weekends were fully dedicated to preparing for the examination. It was a challenge especially in trying to stay focused as a tired mind tends to stray away from what needs to be done. Nevertheless, the result I have gained from my efforts is worthwhile and a great encouragement for me to strive higher,” Angel shared.

Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC, also shared in the joy of the graduates’ achievements and was enthusiastic about the recognition for TAR UC from CIMA. “This is not only a great achievement for Mun Hei and Angel but also a great achievement for TAR UC! Certainly all good things come in threes! Mun Hei and Angel’s achievements signify the quality of education at TAR UC. And it is very gratifying to see that our five decades of persistent emphasis on quality teaching and learning has gained recognition from globally respected professional bodies such as CIMA. This will inspire us to step up our efforts to nurture and develop many more outstanding students such as Mun Hei and Angel,” he said.
