For two TAR UC final year students of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electrical and Electronics, participating in the Electrical Engineering Final Year Poster Competition (‘EEFYP 2016’) proved fruitful when they won the 2nd Runner-up and Consolation prizes. Lim Jian Hau won the 2nd Runner-up position while Leow Wai Jun took home the consolation prize in the said competition which was organised by the Electrical Engineering Technical Division of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (‘IEM’) on 19 August 2016. The aim of this inter-varsity competition was to showcase final year projects by Electronic and Electrical final year students in the form of posters.
Lim Jian Hau won RM500 and a certificate for his poster describing his project entitled ‘Development of DC-DC Converter with MPPT Circuit for Low-Power Solar Energy Harvesting’. The project revolves around a solar charger which is set to function like a power bank where it uses solar energy instead to charge up any electrical devices. “The main challenge I faced while embarking on this project was designing a new circuit for this product and this was where my lecturers were very helpful in guiding me step by step. What makes my project different from the other similar products in the market is that my project is made up of a simpler design circuit where it is more economical to produce,” Jian Hau shared.
Leow Wai Jun on the other hand won the Consolation prize consisting of RM200 and a certificate in the competition. His poster is entitled ‘Intelligent Energy Saver Using Ultra Smooth Power Controllers’ which is about an intelligent energy saver for electrical appliances using human activity detection for the purpose of conserving energy.
