In order to preserve the legacies of the late Mr Paul Chong Yean Seong or fondly known as Mr YS Chong and the late Dato’ Kum Boo who were instrumental figures in establishing TAR UC, two TAR UC alumni dedicated their effort and resources to produce a book each on these two leaders. “To Sir With Love” is the title of the book depicting the amazing life of Mr YS Chong and was written by Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr Lau Ban Tin. Meanwhile, “The Infallible Dato’ Kum Boo” is about the extraordinary life of Dato’ Kum Boo which was written by Dato’ Spencer Tan. The launching of the books was held on 8 January 2022 at TAR UC Kuala Lumpur Main Campus where Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UC, joined the event virtually to celebrate with the authors. In addition, Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of Alumni Council of TAR UC and member of the Board of Governors of TAR UC and Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC were also present at the event.

Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai expressed his appreciation to the two authors for producing the two important books. “The most significant legacy of the late Mr YS Chong and the late Dato’ Kum Boo is their dedication and love for their students that is always treasured and remembered by their students. For all their great contributions for TAR UC, both Mr YS Chong and Dato’ Kum Boo truly stand out as the giants among men! I would like to congratulate the two authors who are also TARCians, for their effort and dedication in producing these two valuable books. It is only right to preserve the history of these two luminaries who had done so much for this institution since the early years of establishment,” he said.

Tan Sri Dato' Sri Dr Lau Ban Tin who was a student of Mr YS Chong shared some interesting facts about the life of his beloved lecturer. “Mr YS Chong had endured a challenging life right from his younger days as a youth. But these challenges and obstacles only made him a stronger person especially in pursuing his education. This is why when TAR College as it was known back then came to being, he was very committed to the founding principles of the institution in giving equal opportunities to all in obtaining good tertiary education. Mr YS Chong was also an intelligent man who could foresee the growing importance of professional qualifications. As the first Head of School of Business Studies, he worked hard to pave the way for TAR College students to also obtain globally recognised professional qualifications such as ACCA, ICSA and CIMA. It is because of Mr YS Chong that many established accountants in Malaysia today are TARCians,” he shared.

The late Dato’ Kum Boo was extremely instrumental in the setting up of this institution. Among his significant contributions to the then TAR College included securing suitable borrowed premises at government schools for the College to conduct classes and he assisted in the introduction of many successful courses that were conducted by the College. Dato’ Kum Boo was also the first Head of School of Technology where he introduced many successful engineering and built environment programmes that were conducted by the College. “It has been a privilege to have penned down the remarkable life story of such an inspiring personality who was also my mentor. Dato’ Kum Boo was a man who knew the value and importance of education and he dreamt of witnessing many generations of Malaysians getting quality tertiary education. This is why, when he was still alive, he hardly missed any convocation sessions held at Campus. His story is important for many TARCians to know and cherish and that is why I wrote this book,” Dato’ Spencer Tan said.
