Coming in with no expectation, TAR UC student, Teoh Jia Jun, in the most astounding fashion, created history as he emerged as the first Malaysian to win a medal in the 11th ASEAN Skills Competition in the Web Design Category. Jia Jun who is pursuing his Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security brought home the Bronze medal and a certificate of achievement from the competition which was held from 24-26 September 2016. He competed with 13 other participants from 7 countries namely Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia and Cambodia.

The three day competition was divided into 7 modules where for module 1 to 3, participants had to revamp old websites by transforming these non-responsive websites into becoming highly interactive and attractive online interfaces.  Subsequently for module 4 to 7, participants were required to build the interactive elements of a website including the server sites as well.

Jia Jun recalled the many challenges he faced during the competition. “I competed in the competition with no knowledge on what to expect from it. On top of this, the time frame of three days was very short to learn and apply what I know to design the websites which were required in the competition.  I am very grateful for the help from my lecturers, Ms Tan Bee Sian and Mr Liaw Chun Voon, who guided and advised me in this competition. I constantly communicated with them to seek their opinions and they helped me a lot in providing sound advice and ways to complete the assignments in a shorter time frame. In addition to this, certain subjects which I have had learnt in my Diploma in Science (Internet Technology) at TAR UC provided me the fundamental knowledge and information to be able to compete in this competition,” he explained in detail.

Another TAR UC student who competed in the competition was Jeffrey Ting Ming Yeong who is also studying the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security. Jeffrey participated in the IT Network Systems Administration category.
