A Winning Poetry on 'Resilience' During this Pandemic

This promising young chap hopes to make waves in the literary world in the near future.

This world will soon see light, But for now, we will have to fight, was the last stanza of the winning poetry by Adrian Chow Wei Kian, a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) English with Education student at TAR UC. His poetry won the second prize in the 2021 IMU Poetry Competition organised by the International Medical University (‘IMU’) which was open to all students of higher education institutions.

Adrian got to know about the IMU poetry competition from one of his lecturers. “Ms Santini, Programme Leader of the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (‘FSSH’) shared about it through WhatsApp. What made me decide to actually participate in this competition was that I was already searching for competitions to enter so that I could test my skills. When this IMU Poetry competition came up, I realised that this was my chance. So I quickly decided to join without hesitation,” he said.

“My inspiration behind my entry for the competition was the ability to carry on. ‘Resilience’ means the ability to recover from situations. So when I wrote my poem entitled, ‘World’s Fate’, I wanted to convey to everyone that no matter how hard our situation is right now in this pandemic, when everything may seem like it is set up to fail, we will be able to overcome it as long as we continue to push forward and don’t give up,” he enthused.

He continued on to say that he would definitely participate in poetry competitions again if given a chance after this, because no matter if he would win or lose, he would still gain the experience in partaking in competitions and he could share his work.

“One of my life goals is to create a name for myself as a published author. Upon completing my Bachelor’s Degree, I want to be able to attain that goal of being a published author. I want to release novels, poetry books, and even short stories. While pursuing that goal, I also want to put what I have learned in my Bachelor’s Degree into practice and that is by going into teaching in schools,” he explained.
