11 students from the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business (‘FAFB’) continued a legacy of academic excellence in and out of the classroom as they won multiple prizes during the MICPA – CAANZ Accountancy Week which was held from 22 – 25 November 2017.

Lim Jing Jie, Ong Jea Tiong, Liew Pei Ying Jesslyn, from the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme and Ooi Kin Chee from the Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) programme emerged as Champions in the Business Strategy Challenge: Management Simulation Game. Diploma in Business Studies (Accounting) students, Foo Shir Shian, Cheah Kah Ling and Lim Sze Hui came in third in the Diploma level Accounting Student Quiz. Additionally, Pang Wan Qi, a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) student, Raynard Lee Chun Kit, a Diploma in Business Studies (Accounting) student, and Teh De Yang and Nigel Tan Wai Hoe from the Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) programme won Champion in the Badminton mixed doubles and men’s doubles respectively.

When asked their winning strategy in the Business Strategy Challenge, Ooi Kin Chee shared that good communication between the team was the key to winning. “We were able to segregate each of our tasks and each team member knew exactly what he or she was supposed to do. And that I think was the main element that contributed to us winning the competition.”

“This competition is a first for me and the game is a bit complicated,” shared Jesslyn. “There are many different elements involved so you need some time to process and really understand what the game is about.”

Another team member, Ong Jea Tiong added that the most memorable part of the game for him was the amount of consideration they had to go through before making any decisions. “The game stimulates us to think deeper due to the complexity of the game. A lot of thought goes into making a decision and developing a strategy,” he said. “We had to take into account many factors which could affect the outcome of the game.”

Team leader – Lim Jing Jie added that he hoped that more teams from TAR UC will participate in events organised by MICPA in the future.  This particular competition was his second time participating in it. “If we participate again next year I would suggest splitting ourselves into different teams to represent TAR UC,” he advised his team mates. “Don’t pass up the opportunity to lead a team and involve our juniors as well so that they will be able to gain the necessary experience.”
