Following from research and fact-finding, a book about one of TAR UC’s founding leaders, the late Tun Tan Siew Sin was launched on 22 May 2022 at TAR UC’s Kuala Lumpur Main Campus. Titled “A Study of the Relationship Between Tun Tan Siew Sin and the Malaysian Chinese Community (1961 – 1974)”, the book was officially launched by YB Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee Ka Siong, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, TARC Education Foundation cum Minister of Transport.

Written by Mr H’ng Gaik Hong, a researcher under TAR UC’s Institute of Social Economic Research (‘ISER’), the book provides an in-depth study of Tun Tan Siew Sin, an instrumental figure in both Malaysia and TAR UC’s founding history who contributed tremendously towards shaping the nation’s development and maintaining ethnic harmony.

“Looking back, it was through Tun Tan Siew Sin’s foresight that led to the establishment of Tunku Abdul Rahman College, which aimed to create more opportunities for Malaysians to further their studies and build a better life for themselves. The success of the institution today is testament to the philosophy and firm belief that Tun Tan Siew Sin and the then MCA leaders had – education given to whomsoever regardless of age, race, creed or class will bring benefits to the people and country,” said Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee Ka Siong in his opening speech.

“By re-examining and combing through historical documents, this book sheds new light on Tun Tan Siew Sin and the reasoning behind the decisions made under his leadership with the hope of dispelling misconception based on one-sided understanding and prejudice he had faced from the Malaysian Chinese community.”

Also attending the book launching ceremony were the late Tun Tan Siew Sin’s daughters – Tan Siok Eng, Datin Paduka Tan Siok Choo, who is also a member of the Board of Trustees, TARC Education Foundation, and Tan Siok Lee. In addition, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UC and Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC were also present at the event.

After the book launching, a sharing session on the book was held by Assoc Prof Dr Wong Wun Bin, Deputy Dean of the Institute of Chinese Studies, UTAR.
