TAR UMT’s students rose to the occasion at the Asia Pacific Cyberattack Response Challenge 2023 to finish as the First Runner-ups in the virtual competition on 20 May 2023.

Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security student Choo Chi Siang and Diploma in Information Technology student Wang Teng Zheng formed ‘Team Cincai’ together with another student from Multimedia University (MMU), to compete with students and industry professionals from multiple countries including Indonesia, Brunei and Taiwan in this online competition.

Organised by the Institute of Management Sarawak (MASA) and Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS), the Asia Pacific Cyberattack Response Challenge provides a platform for cyber security enthusiasts to demonstrate their capability to analyse, investigate and respond to different types of cyber incidents. Teams were scored based on speed, efficiency and number of cyber security problems solved.

“It was an eye-opening experience to be able to compete alongside my friends, peers and industry professionals. This competition was a great opportunity for us to learn how to apply our academic knowledge practically and tackle real-world problems. I am proud that we were able to work well as a team by communicating efficiently and bouncing ideas off each other when tackling the harder challenges during the competition,” said Chi Siang.

There were mixed emotions from Teng Zheng despite their First Runner-up finish, who added: “There is some disappointment for not finishing first, but there is also a sense of pride and accomplishment within our team for being regarded so highly. It will definitely motivate us to strive for excellence in future competitions.”

“I would encourage my peers to challenge themselves outside the classroom like joining competitions because it offers a chance to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings, develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, gain hands-on experience, and refine specific techniques related to their field, just like how we did!”
