TARCian Aces in ACCA Examination the Second Time

Wong Yi Han continues a streak of excellence in the ACCA examinations when she emerged as Top in Malaysia for the SBL paper in the ACCA March 2022 examination. She previously ranked 2nd in Malaysia and 3rd in the World for the AFM paper in September 2021.

Achieving what she initially thought was impossible, Wong Yi Han was over the moon when informed that she obtained the highest score in Malaysia and 9th in the World for the Strategic Business Leader (‘SBL’) paper in the ACCA March 2022 examination. The final year Bachelor of Business (Hons) Accounting and Finance student from TAR UC's Penang Branch Campus previously ranked 2nd in Malaysia and 3rd in the World for the Advanced Financial Management (‘AFM’) in the ACCA September 2021 sitting.

“This is truly an important achievement for me as I believe that being Top in Malaysia is always an impossible and unattainable achievement for me. I am proud and grateful that I finally did it!” she exclaimed.

Yi Han who prepared for the SBL paper after completing her internship at Ernst & Young, shared that gaining some real-world exposure had helped her answer the questions with breadth and depth.

“The SBL paper requires commercial acumen which one has when he/she is in professional practice. This was a challenge for me as I have minimal work experience. Fortunately, my internship experience had prepared me well in terms of my analytical and professional scepticism skills and it helped me analyse and evaluate the relationship between different information provided in the case study effectively and allowed me to generate relevant ideas from multiple points of view. Besides, my lecturers were also extremely insightful in helping me broaden my mind and expand my views when I was preparing for the paper,” she elaborated.

“In my opinion, being a student and getting real-life exposure in a real-world setting as an intern are two different things that have widened my perspectives in different aspects. As a student, I learn technical knowledge regarding accounting and finance while my main responsibilities are to manage my studies well and work effectively with the team members to complete assignments. Conversely, as an intern in a real-world setting, I learnt how to apply that technical knowledge in performing daily tasks practically.”

Wanting to correct some common misconceptions about the accounting field, she highlighted that accounting is more than book keeping and is not as boring as people might make it out to be. “In this dynamic business world, an important role of an accountant is to exercise his/her professional judgement in helping the organisation enhance its financial performance in a competitive business environment. This requires a unique set of skills which include analytical ability, evaluation, commercial acumen, professional scepticism and communication,” she shared.

Currently preparing for her final exam in her final semester, Yi Han will be sitting for her last ACCA professional paper which is the Strategic Business Reporting (‘SBR’) in the ACCA June 2022 examination sitting. After graduation, she intends to pursue a career as an auditor with the aim to learn as much as she can about the audit and accounting field.

To date, TAR UC has produced 84 winners who won 107 prizes in the ACCA professional examinations.
