The Centre for Business Incubation & Entrepreneurial Ventures (‘CBIEV’) recently organised a cheque presentation ceremony and ideation session held on 28 March 2019 at the iSpark Incubation Center, Kuala Lumpur Main Campus. The purposes for the event were firstly to witness the transfer of IP rights for Cashierbook, an iSpark project that has been commercialised, from TAR UC to CMG Holdings and secondly, to have an iSpark ideation session where two TAR UC students presented two entrepreneurial ideas to an audience of successful alumni, industry players, TAR UC staff and students so that the students could obtain feedback from them. The two ideas were just at their initial stage and they needed to be refined to make them viable.

During the event, Dato’ Dr Thed Cor Yong, Managing Director of CMG Holdings who is also TAR UC alumnus, presented a cheque of RM 10,000 to Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC, for the transfer of IP rights from TAR UC to CMG Holdings for Cashierbook, a blockchain-based  e-commerce platform.

Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei expressed his elation for iSpark projects at TAR UC. “I am amazed by the response and enthusiasm shown by students of TAR UC. There are a number of projects under iSpark that have shown success. Even though it is a long journey for iSpark to become a successful incubator, it is a good start. The young minds in TAR UC are our greatest asset. They are our future. The entrepreneurship ventures that have been converted to business plans show that the exposure and training of our students at TAR UC is a success. Even, Dato’ Dr Thed, an alumnus of TAR UC is enthusiastic to come back to the campus to fund projects. As such, many will be successful entrepreneurs in the future.”

Dato’ Dr Thed had some encouraging words for the students who were present. “When I gave my input on iSpark when it first started, we had a vision in mind. For any country to grow, there must be entrepreneurs. Our people are afraid of failures, but we should always carry with us the TARCian spirit, which is never to give up. iSpark is just the start. It is just the beginning of the journey. One idea cannot make you rich. As Jack Ma puts it, the ideas need to be sharpened to become better and better.”

At the ideation session, two TAR UC students presented their ideas to the crowd. The first one was about a ‘Collision warning system for motorcycle’ where a motorcycle helmet can be fixed with a LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system to warn motorcyclist of impending collision on the road. The other one was on a ‘Virtual coach’ which guides a person to do the correct warm-up exercises through an on-screen avatar. Quite a number from the audience expressed their views about the two ideas and how it could be improved further.

Last but not least, Dr Tang Tiong Yew, Managing Director of Cashierbook Sdn Bhd who was formerly a lecturer of TAR UC, spoke about the journey of Cashierbook and how one must continue changing when change is required to become a successful entrepreneur.
