Three TAR UC Diploma in Business Studies (Accounting) students namely, Chin Jun Wen, Kui Jun Foong and Lim Pep Lead won Champion prize in the 2nd National Accounting Diploma Quiz Competition (‘NADiQC’) 2018 organised by Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Bangi (‘KPTM’) and the Malaysian Institute of Accountants (‘MIA’) on 13 October 2018. The TAR UC team competed with 101 institutions at the qualifying round, and then with 30 institutions in the quarter-final round before proceeding to the semi-final round and the grand final round with the last 5 standing teams where they clinched the champion prize.

The quiz tests the understanding and general knowledge of students in accounting-related subjects such as financial accounting, management accounting, auditing and taxation for accounting diploma programme. According to Lim Pep Lead, one of the team members, what motivated them to win was their spirit of determination. “Our desire and iron will to win in this competition led us to form a study group before the event. Another source of motivation was our promise to Ms Chloe Law Chiau Yee, the lecturer-in-charge, that we would bring home the trophy and make TAR UC proud,” he enthused.

He emphasised that without teamwork, they would not have come thus far. “We had a common vision. And because of that, we could see ourselves making it to the finals. We also formed a good team as each of us had different qualities and strengths that helped us win,” he said.

Chin Jun Wen, the only girl in the team, was very positive with the education in TAR UC that helped them win the competition. “There is quality in the TAR UC syllabus. The standard of our accounting programme is high as it is a professional course. And due to the high standards, we had an advantage over the other participants. Apart from that, we were also guided by good lecturers, namely Mr Soo Kee Heng, Ms Leon Siew Lin, Ms Liew Wei Lee and Mr Chin Hooi Khoon who taught us several accounting subjects and armed us with knowledge and skills needed in the competition,” she said.

Another team member, Kui Jun Foong, spoke about the challenge they had to face in the competition. “The biggest challenge we had to deal with was not the complexity of the questions, but the emotional stress that was brought about by the competition. The final round was held on stage with all the judges and participants together. We felt anxious at times but every time we answered correctly, we gave each other words of encouragement. That gave us the confidence to see ourselves through,” he mentioned.

All of them agreed that being well-prepared is the key to winning. “Try to stay calm during the contest even though it is difficult to, especially under great stress. Two brains are always better than one. Always work as a team. Utilise your team power because teamwork is the only thing that would make you stand out from the rest,” they said.
