In the spirit of unity and to ensure students’ well-being are being taken care of, the Government reiterated its commitment to channelling financial support towards TAR UMT.

Yang Berhormat Anthony Loke Siew Fook, Minister of Transport and Yang Berhormat Steven Sim Chee Keong, Deputy Minister of Finance II paid a visit to TAR UMT’s Kuala Lumpur Campus on 17 January 2023 while bearing this good news ahead of the Chinese New Year celebrations, and were welcomed by Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee Ka Siong, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TARC Education Foundation, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Liow Tiong Lai, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UMT, Tan Sri Chan Kong Choy, Chairman of TAR UMT Alumni Council and Member of the Board of Governors of TAR UMT, and Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT.

Loke handed the Letter of Approval for the financial support and a mock cheque indicating a total sum of RM40 million to Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee. “The Government sees the importance to continue channelling the necessary financial support to TAR UMT as the institution continues to provide tertiary education to many students, especially from underprivileged backgrounds. We are committed to ensuring the people’s well-being is taken care of, and we know this financial support will be put to good use for this very purpose by TAR UMT. And I am also happy to inform everyone that this financial support will be a yearly commitment by the Government to TAR UMT,” Loke said.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee shared: “I am happy to receive this news and I thank the Government for its commitment to support TAR UMT. This financial funding is important for TAR UMT to ensure we can continue providing affordable tertiary education to students and give financial support to underprivileged students to pursue tertiary education at TAR UMT. In fact, in the early years of this institution’s establishment, the Government of the day provided financial support on a dollar-to-dollar basis. This has allowed the then TAR College and TAR University College (TAR UC) to provide affordable education to many students and as a result, produced close to 300,000 graduates thus far. And today, with this good news of the Government’s continued commitment, TAR UMT can continue its mission of producing more qualified human capital for the country.”
