On 19 – 22 December 2016, Dr Lim Hong Chang, a senior lecturer of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing, Johor Branch Campus, had the honour of being invited to present two talks at an international workshop organized by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (‘IOC’) of UNESCO, Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (‘WESTPAC’), Harmful Algal Bloom (‘HAB’) Programme, held in Institute of Oceanography, Nha Trang, Vietnam.

When asked what he presented in Vietnam, he said: “During the WESTPAC Workshop, I shared the information and collective results obtained throughout my research on recent HAB events, trend of HAB occurrence, biology and distributions of certain groups of toxin-producing and red tide species in the Western Pacific Region. Steering committee members of the programme from Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines and Indonesia had also attended and the future action plan on HAB science in Western Pacific region was discussed,” he replied.

Dr Lim had always wanted to be a scientist ever since he was young. “I am especially interested and fascinated with the science of living things and that led me to be what I am today, a research scientist and an educator,” he said.

“Back in 2008, I was given the opportunity to pursue my postgraduate study with my former supervisors Associate Professor Dr Lim Po Teen, Head of Bachok Marine Research Station, Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Malaya and Associate Professor Dr Leaw Chui Pin, Senior Research Fellow of Bachok Marine Research Station, Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences, University of Malaya, after obtaining my Bachelor’s Degree. They brought me into the field of Harmful Algal Blooms, which is also known as Red Tides that is associated with various kinds of shellfish poisoning, fish poisoning and fish-kill. Throughout the past 8 years, we have been working very closely on the occurrence, distribution and impact of these HAB organisms to aquaculture in Malaysia,” he shared.

He said that TAR UC has been very supportive towards his work in capacity building and development. “Currently we are in the midst of setting up laboratories, Aquaponic and etc in TAR UC, Johor Branch Campus, to cater for teaching and learning. At the same time, it will serve as a platform for continuity in collaborative research with various local governmental authorities, e.g. Department of Fisheries (‘DOF’), Fisheries Research Institute (‘FRI’), universities as well as with researchers from other countries,” he added.

On his role in TAR UC Johor Branch Campus, he said: “I have been with TAR UC since June 2015 as a Senior Lecturer. I teach Aquaculture-related subjects for Diploma in Aquaculture, a two-year Diploma programme that is solely offered in Johor Branch Campus at Segamat, Johor. My expertise is on seafood safety for export and human consumption. On the other hand, the programme emphasizes on the technical hands-on skills in aquaculture as well as some components in fundamentals of business and entrepreneurship to prepare graduates with knowledge and skills to venture into aquaculture industries.”
