TAR University College Hosts 5th Malaysia Weiqi Open Championship

TAR University College successfully hosted the 5th Malaysia Weiqi Open Championship held on 30 - 31 May 2015 at Bangunan Tun Tan Siew Sin which saw about 200 participants from Malaysia, Korea, Japan and China competing in 5 categories, namely, Amateur Dan Level, High Kyu Level, Intermediate Kyu Level, Low Kyu Level and University Level. The results are as shown below:

Amateur Dan Level
Champion: Chang Fu Kang (Malaysia)
1st Runner-up: Park Jisun (Korea)
2nd Runner-up: Shi Ming Le (China)

High Kyu Level
Champion: Lo Wei Haw (Malaysia)
1st Runner-up: Chang Xin (Malaysia)
2nd Runner-up: Eugene Wong (Malaysia)

Intermediate Kyu Level
Champion: San Horii (Japan)
1st Runner-up: Sim Kai Jin (Malaysia)
2nd Runner-up: Lunye Wei Yao (Malaysia)

Low Kyu Level
Champion: Kosumi Shimmaru (Japan)
1st Runner-up: Mia Hirose (Japan)
2nd Runner-up: Mumi Hirose (Japan)

University Level
Champion: Chow Zhi Mei [Diploma in Architecture]
1st Runner-up: Chong Yaw Wen [Bachelor of Corporate Administration (Hons)]
2nd Runner-up: Tan Ee Beng [Bachelor of Public Relations (Hons)]

Jointly organised by TAR University College, Sport and Exercise Science Society of TAR University College, Malaysia Weiqi Association (‘MWA’) and Kongzi Institute for the 5th time, this Weiqi competition was held to promote and to keep the tradition of Weiqi playing alive.

During the Opening Ceremony, Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR University College said: "In playing an active promotion of Weiqi, an ancient board game originating from China almost 3,000 years ago to the community at large, the students and staff had benefited by acquiring important skills in event management and marketing as well as gaining insight into the importance of mind sports game in enhancing personal development and intelligence."

An invited guest, Mr Liu Luo Sheng, a China Weiqi Specialist, gave a talk on the attractiveness and significance of Weiqi and how one can be inspired to play Weiqi by knowing the history of it.

Weiqi is a game which combines the knowledge of art and science for the cultivation of strategic thinking and boosting intelligence. In promoting this game, young people would have improved concentration skills, patience and logical thinking skills that will help them to study well.
