From 7 – 25 October 2019, students from the Faculty of Computing and Information Technology (‘FOCS’) attended the Cybersecurity Capacity Building Programme 2019, organised by the Asia Cybersecurity Exchange (‘ASIACYBERX’). This industry-related programme in cybersecurity was sponsored by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (‘MDEC’) and hosted by TAR UC which is recognised as a Premier Digital Tech University by MDEC.

Among the important objectives of this programme were creating awareness among students about career prospects in cybersecurity, creating a ready supply of cybersecurity practitioners for the industry and the digital economy and providing students with real-life industry experience. In addition, students who participated in the programme were also prepared for the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (‘ISACA’) Cybersecurity Nexus (‘CSX’) Fundamentals examination.

The contents of the programme covered several areas in cybersecurity such as security administration, penetration testing skills, Blue Team and digital forensics as well as a workshop on ISACA CSX. There were also sharing sessions by industry experts and a mentorship programme to help and guide the students. Upon passing the ISACA CSX Fundamentals examination, TAR UC students will receive the globally recognised ISACA CSX Fundamentals Certification.

Yap Kin Hoe was one of the students who obtained the ISACA CSX Fundamentals Certification. Currently pursuing the Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security in TAR UC, he was very satisfied with what he learnt in the programme. “I am so glad I registered for this programme because the contents on cybersecurity were comprehensive and gave me a greater understanding of the cybersecurity industry. I also greatly appreciate the industry sharing session especially by LE Global Services Sdn Bhd or LGMS, which is a prominent penetration testing expert firm in Malaysia. Their sharing session has increased my interest in the cybersecurity industry. And with the recognised ISACA CSX Fundamentals certification, I now have a strong foundation to pursue a career in cybersecurity,” he said.
