TAR UC Graduate Tops CIMA Exam

Lee Shou Cheng obtained the highest mark in Malaysia for the CIMA Strategic Case Study Examination in February 2020.

Being notified of the news that he was Malaysia’s Prize Winner for the CIMA Strategic Case Study (‘SCS’) Examination in February 2020 certainly came as a pleasant surprise for Lee Shou Cheng. A graduate from TAR UC with a Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) last year, Shou Cheng was overjoyed and grateful when he learned that he had excelled in his first attempt and emerged as the top scorer for the said exam in Malaysia. Moreover, he was part of the first batch to sit for the exam under a new syllabus.

“This was my first time taking the CIMA professional qualification exam and the A-Star Programme was really challenging,” he shared. The CIMA A-Star Programme is a unique one exam pathway for high achievers to become a Chartered Global Management Accountant (‘CGMA’) designation holder.

“Due to the change in exam syllabus, I had to undergo an external intensive tuition course. Luckily, TAR UC’s Bachelor of Accounting (Hons) programme covers most of the required syllabus already. I only needed to do some extra reading for some areas that were not covered and practise with CIMA material and to familiarise myself with the exam format.”

Shou Cheng recalled that his studies at TAR UC provided him with all-round knowledge that helped him prepare for the exam.

“Every semester we were exposed to different areas of studies that are interrelated. Being able to link each area allowed me to think from different perspectives and come up with more comprehensive ideas. Also, we had been given case studies since year one. This prepared me well to extract information faster and construct my answers effectively thus enabling me to manage my time more efficiently during the exam.”

Currently working in a multinational company, Shou Cheng also shared that his education at TAR UC also helped him develop essential soft skills that he applies at the workplace every day. “Soft skills and presentation skills are equally important as technical knowledge if you want to excel. As a student, I learned how to improve my communication skills and work well with others. This definitely helps me in the corporate world as we have to work closely with people from different departments, and even different parts of the world.”

“This achievement is my confidence booster and a significant building block in shaping who I am today. When studying for this professional exam I challenged myself to surpass my limits and do better than I had ever done before. Today, I can proudly say that I am someone who knows exactly what he wants and does not lose sight of his goals, until it is achieved,” he added.
