TAR UC becomes the centre of attention again when two of its students ranked among the world’s best in the recent ACCA examinations. In the ACCA December 2018 examinations, Teo Loi Pin emerged 10th in the world (top in Malaysia) in the ACCA Top Affiliates while Lau Jia Yi came in at 4th placing in the world (top in Malaysia) for Strategic Business Leader paper.

Loi Pin previously also excelled in the ACCA December 2017 examination where he was ranked eighth in the world (top in Malaysia) for Paper P1 Governance, Risk and Ethics. His impressive ranking in ACCA Top Affiliates demonstrates his consistent strong performance as it is awarded based on his results across all Strategic Professional papers, achieved in the first attempt. A TAR UC’s Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) graduate, Loi Pin said that he was driven to succeed because he had this urge for self-fulfillment. “I wanted to complete my ACCA with something good. This motivated me to work harder and smarter.”

Jia Yi, who is currently pursuing the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme, shared the reason that motivated her to do well. “I have always noticed the achievements of TAR UC students being published in the newspapers and social media. This has motivated me to work hard so that one day, I would be featured too. Besides, I have always wanted to win an award either at the national or international level.”

Both of them readily credited TAR UC for helping them tremendously in achieving their outstanding results. Loi Pin felt the conducive environment in TAR UC inspired him to do well. “The environment in TAR UC had instilled a sense of discipline in me. And at the same time, the lecturers always went an extra mile to ensure the lectures were interesting to stimulate learning among the students.” As for Jia Yi, she could not agree more that TAR UC has excellent lecturers and tutors who do not hesitate to help students, be it in sharing academic knowledge or students’ personal development. “They have their own teaching style that helps students achieve not only ordinary passes but to excel with flying colours. Besides that, TAR UC library has a very good environment to study in and it has loads of information that I can refer to whenever there is a need.”

On the challenges he faced in preparing for the examination, Loi Pin said: “It is undeniable that ACCA syllabus is of a certain level of difficulty. Some even claim that it is impossible to complete the entire syllabus thoroughly. Therefore, I committed more time just to ensure I covered the syllabus as much as possible for the exam.” Jia Yi too had much to say about the obstacles she had to overcome. “I would say that time management is a challenge for a Bachelor’s Degree student pursuing ACCA at the same time. Besides that, I am also a board member of TAR UC ACCA Society. It is vital to strike a balance between academic learning and extra-curricular activities as both help to train us in personal development. We can balance both studying and extra-curricular activities by multi-tasking and prioritising tasks and completing them within the deadlines.”

On his future plans, Loi Pin has a clear goal in his mind. “I intend to start off my career in auditing, which provides greater exposure to different industries. In my opinion, TAR UC’s education is very holistic, which covers technical knowledge and interpersonal skills. It prepares me for the actual work environment.”

Jia Yi’s vision of her future differs slightly. “My plan is to take two optional papers in June 2019 and pass them in the first attempt. After that, I would like to start my career in Singapore. TAR UC has helped prepare us for our career by providing us internship opportunities while pursuing our degree. In this way, we have been exposed to what is expected of us even before we set foot into the working world.”
