Engulfed by astonishment was what could describe Lai Keng May when she was notified that she had won 1st Runner up in the 5th IEEE Final Year Project Competition 2018 for Track 6: Electronics Packaging organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (‘IEEE’) Malaysia Section.

The Year 4 Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) Electrical and Electronics student decided to participate after receiving encouragement from her supervisor – Mr Yeo Kwok Shien, Programme Leader from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, to submit her Final Year Project (‘FYP’) poster online.

Her FYP entitled “SECS/GEM Protocol Integration and Data Processing for Real-Time SMT Equipment Monitoring” studies the communication protocol between the host and the equipment used in the industry.

“I wanted to gain some experience in producing a proper project poster and proposal,” she shared. “I didn’t have high expectations in this competition so I was genuinely surprised when my supervisor notified me that I had won second place. This really exceeded my expectations and boosted my confidence in my capability.”

“In the future I hope to become a successful engineer by committing myself to continuous professional development,” she added. “I wish to have the opportunity to make life more convenient for others and create a positive impact in society.”

“Studying at TAR UC provides me with a great opportunity to gain technical knowledge that will prove useful in building my career in the future. Competitions such as these provide me with a platform to explore my abilities and skills throughout my years of studying and applying them in a real-life situation.”

The IEEE Final Year Project (FYP) Competition is a national level online competition that is open to all final year students who are currently undertaking their Final Year Project or have recently completed their studies to submit their own original works within the scope of 13 offered tracks for evaluation. Sponsorship and evaluation is granted by an IEEE technical chapter in Malaysia.
