It was a celebratory week for TAR UC students at the annual MICPA-CAANZ Accountancy Week which was held from 19 - 26 October 2018. Two teams representing TAR UC won 1st Runner-up in the MICPA-CAANZ Accounting Quiz at Diploma and Bachelor’s Degree levels respectively. A student from each level also won the Highest Score Award.

The Diploma team consisted of Diploma in Business Studies (Accounting) students - Pau Chang Hui, Koh Ching Vi and Chin Jun Wen (recipient of the Highest Score award). Meanwhile the team representing TAR UC at the Bachelor’s Degree level consisted of Ng Cheng Yuan from the Bachelor in Accounting (Hons), Yong Mun Sin and Pung Xue Ching, both from the Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) programme. Tan Ying Zhen, also a Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) student who was part of a second Bachelor’s Degree team representing TAR UC managed to win the Highest Score award.

“I am so lucky” was the first thought that popped up in Chin Jun Wen’s mind when she found out her personal achievement was the highest score as well as her team winning silver in the Diploma level competition.

“After participating in this competition and winning, I feel that my confidence and determination in pursuing my accounting studies has increased,” she said. “I joined this competition not only to gain experience but also because I was confident that it would add value to my future endeavors and a test of my skills and knowledge.”

When asked what challenges they faced during the competition, Jun Wen commented that it was in the general knowledge section. However, she and her team were able to overcome that obstacle by putting their heads together and lean on each other’s strength to power through.

“The scope of the competition is covered in our syllabus so basically we were confident in answering technical questions which tested our accounting knowledge. But being solely equipped with accounting-related knowledge is insufficient. We still need to read more and broaden our minds.”

On the other hand, Yong Mun Sin took the opportunity to thank her teammates for their support as her nerves had gotten the better of her at the beginning of the competition. “Fortunately my teammates were very supportive and patient. With their encouragement, I managed to calm down and concentrate on the questions being asked during the competition,” she shared.

“This competition provided me with a chance to gauge my level of knowledge in this field and enhance my knowledge too to help me to pass all my ACCA papers within 2 years!”
