Symposium a Learning Opportunity for Communication and Creative Students

TAR UMT students were put in the spotlight to present their academic findings, critical analyses and perspectives on various aspects of the communication and creative industries during the 2023 Centre for Media and Communication Research (CMCR) Symposium on 3 January 2024.

The online symposium, now in its fourth edition, is the culminating year-end symposium organised by the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries (FCCI) aimed at encouraging final year advertising, public relations, broadcasting, journalism and media studies students to discuss their research findings on various practices of communication media and its impacts on society and the world.

“This symposium is an effective platform where students are given the chance to share their research, knowledge and skills with each other while gaining valuable feedback from their peers. This will contribute to the students’ comprehensive learning process that is not just confined to in class,” said Dearna Kee June Chen, Dean of FCCI.

Mr Jaffri Amin Osman, Managing Director of World Communications was the keynote speaker for the fourth edition of the CMCR Symposium, who encouraged up and coming communication students to be “SQUARE” – strategic, quick, unique, agile, resourceful and engaging, so they can shape up into communication practitioners that are capable of empathising and adapting to current world scenarios.

Bachelor of Public Relations (Hons) student Tan Qian Yi who presented her research on the effectiveness of corporate social responsibility communication in influencing young adults’ perception, believes initiatives like this online symposium supplements her learning experience at TAR UMT.

“The symposium enhances my analytical and critical thinking skills through hands-on learning and advances my knowledge and understanding of the public relations and communication industries. This CMCR symposium provides a great opportunity for us to showcase our research findings and contributions in the chosen field, while also grasping critical writing and presentation skills,” she said.
