TAR UMT in collaboration with the Global Road Safety Alliance and Child Passenger Safety Malaysia (CPSM) and supported by Kontena Nasional, officially launched the ‘Spot It!’ Blind Spot and Road Safety Awareness Campaign. The launching ceremony, held on 13 April 2026 at Bayu Walk, TAR UMT Arena, was officiated by the Minister of Transport, YB Anthony Loke Siew Fook.

The campaign is a student-led initiative organised by 84 Diploma in Advertising students from the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries (FCCI). The campaign’s focus on road safety addresses the serious and ongoing issue affecting the public, which are road accidents, injuries, and fatalities. This project integrates practical learning with social advocacy, allowing students to develop real-world communication materials to promote public safety. The campaign aims to raise road safety awareness and educate the campus community on the critical dangers of vehicle blind spots.

In his speech, YB Anthony Loke said, “Today’s campaign reflects a strong commitment, bringing together the education community and industry in a manner that is both practical and scalable. More importantly, it is not intended as a one-off initiative, but as the foundation of a long-term platform for road safety education, beginning with our universities and expanding into the wider community.”

“I am also encouraged by the strong participation from TAR UMT, including its management, faculty and students, which is vital to the success of this campaign. Young people are not merely participants; they are drivers, riders and decision-makers on our roads. The habits and sense of responsibility they build today will directly shape the safety of our roads in the years to come.”

Meanwhile, Professor Dato' Indera Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UMT, emphasised that the University’s role extends beyond academic excellence to shaping responsible and mindful individuals. He noted that road safety is a joint effort and described blind spots as a ‘silent danger’ that requires active education to mitigate. The President expressed his pride in the students' involvement, stating that their contribution to society reflects the qualities of true leaders.

Dr Jchanet Tan, Co-Founder of CPSM, expressed that this effort requires support from all. “Road safety awareness is a continuous effort. This is why we aim to expand this initiative to other universities and states. We are looking forward to working with many more corporate partners, as ensuring road safety is a shared responsibility.”

Encik Hairulnizam Tokiban, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Kontena Nasional, said: “At Kontena Nasional, safety is not just a priority within our operations, but a responsibility we extend to the wider community. Through this programme, we hope to empower the public with essential knowledge on road safety, especially in understanding blind spots and how to avoid potential accidents.”

“We believe that awareness and education are key drivers in reducing road accidents. By engaging directly with the community, particularly students and young drivers, we aim to instill a culture of safety that will have a lasting impact.”

The two-day campaign, from 13 to 14 April 2026, featured a comprehensive lineup of activities designed for students, staff, and the local community. There were road safety exhibition booths and on-the-spot JPJ mobile services, including license renewals and summons payments. To provide a hands-on learning experience, the event included cycling safety simulations, the ‘Clever Cyclist’ activity, and live demonstrations by collaborating agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and Kontena Nasional.

Reflecting on the impact of the campaign, Tan U Shern, the student campaign leader, said: “This campaign has taught us a lot. On top of the key message on road safety awareness, I, for one learnt how to work with different partners and agencies. This campaign is unlike other assignments. It is a full-blown road safety campaign with various activities and involves various partners. I am grateful for this opportunity, which will certainly add value to my portfolio.”

Building on that experience, team member, Muhammad Aidiel Hakim Mazlan shared, “I did not expect to be doing a campaign of such scale for my diploma. It was tiring and challenging, but our lecturers also journeyed with us every step of the way. We started planning way in advance and we had the campaign’s teaser activity in February this year. Kontena Nasional brought a 40-foot truck for a demonstration, where we observed how smaller road users can disappear entirely from a driver's field of vision. It was an eye-opening experience for me and I realised the importance of this campaign, to continue creating awareness on road safety. I am really grateful for this experience.”

The campaign is also supported by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) and Clever Speda, aiming to foster improved safety behaviour and a better understanding of traffic laws among motorcyclists and drivers. This initiative serves as a pilot study for establishing long-term partnerships in continuous road safety education.
