TAR UMT Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Honours) graduate, Yew Yee Fang, made the University proud by obtaining 2nd Runner-Up in the BQSM Student Excellence Award on 20 December 2022. Besides passing with distinction and being the recipient of the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Certificate of Excellence 2022, Yew Yee Fang was also the Vice-Captain of TAR UMT’s basketball team and represented Malaysia in the ASEAN University Games in 2018.

Organised by the Quantity Surveying Accreditation Council (QSAC) and Board of Quantity Surveyors Malaysia (BQSM) in conjunction with ‘Sambutan Hari Profesion Teknikal Negara 2022’, the BQSM Student Excellence Award aims to recognise outstanding quantity surveying graduates from the professional body’s accredited universities and colleges who in their final year of Bachelor degree or Diploma studies attained the best performance in academic and extracurricular activities. A total of 17 public and private universities and colleges offering BQSM accredited bachelor and diploma programmes submitted their nominations, out of which 3 best students were selected from bachelor programmes and 2 best students from diploma programmes.

Time management is a challenge for Yee Fang who juggles between her studies and sports as she shared: “Besides attending classes, studying, completing assignments and taking exams, I need to put in more time and effort to also attend basketball training. Balancing athletics and academics requires time, energy and a lot of practice.”

“To overcome this, I usually come up with a schedule and prioritise the tasks that need to be done first. On top of that, I slot in breaks during the day to rest and recharge, so that I can perform at my best and ace in both academic and co-curricular activities. All in all, discipline is the most important quality that students should possess as it helps them stay focused on their goals and work harder to achieve them,” she continued.

Yee Fang has this piece of advice to give. “Work hard, play hard. Set a realistic goal, map out a plan and work hard towards your goals. It is also important to seek out growth opportunities as a way to advance your professional development and enhance both your soft and hard skills set. Most importantly is to enjoy university life. Stay positive and do not let any setbacks discourage you,” she said.

TAR UMT has provided her with the “beyond education” experience that helped her a lot in her attainment of success as a graduate.
