TAR UC made a clean sweep of the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Mobile Application Development category of the WorldSkills Malaysia University Challenge (‘WSMUC 2021’). In addition, another TAR UC student won the Bronze medal in the Cyber Security category of the said competition. Held virtually from 27 - 29 October 2021, the competition attracted more than 50 participants from approximately 10 institutes of higher learning which include public and private institutes.

The three students who won the Gold, Silver and Bronze medals in the Mobile Application Development category respectively are Chong Yong Xuan, Chai Qing Hao and Neo Yin. Participants for this category were required to develop two apps. The first app was for Covid-19 patients who were required to undergo self-quarantine at home for 14 days. The app was to be used to record their health condition during the quarantine period. The second app was specifically designed for healthcare workers to monitor and keep track on the progress of Covid-19 patients who were undergoing self-quarantine at home for 14 days.

Yong Xuan, Qing Hao and Neo Yin are currently pursuing their Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Software Systems Development at TAR UC. “It was an exciting experience participating in this competition although limited time was a big challenge for me. As I was afraid of not completing the task on time, my strategy was to draw up a mind map detailing the workflow to develop the required apps as soon as I received the competition’s requirements. I am glad this strategy worked and this achievement will certainly help me in securing an internship in my next semester,” Yong Xuan explained.

“I am grateful that my lecturers encouraged me to participate in this competition because I have gained invaluable experience especially in developing apps that are relevant and useful, Qing Hao said.

Neo Yin continued: “Winning this competition is a clear testament to the fact that what I am learning in my degree programme is of industry standard.”

The other student who won the Bronze medal in the Cyber Security category is Choo Chi Siang. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) in Information Security at TAR UC. “For Cyber Security category, the competition structure is based on Capture-the-Flag (‘CTF’). Participants were required to find a specifically formatted string which is known as flag that is purposely hidden on a webpage. It was a challenging competition as we had to reverse engineer a binary programme to detect the flag. I had to do a lot of research during the competition to help me solve the questions. I am glad that my extensive preparations and guidance from my lecturers and seniors were very helpful,” he shared.

WSMUC 2021 is a maiden competition with the objective of promoting and exposing competitors to future skills relevant to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
