The atmosphere was filled with positive vibes and anticipation as more than 3,000 new Diploma and Bachelor degree students made their way to the University College Hall for the Mass Call on 21 May 2019 as part of the orientation week. It was an induction of sorts for the freshies who would begin their journey with TAR UC from the Mass Call onwards.

Once they had taken their seats, the new students were addressed by Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC, and Ms Kow Wei Shan, President of the Student Representative Council. Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei welcomed the new cohort to TAR UC and gave them encouragement to learn as much as they could and make the most of their time in TAR UC. “Welcome to the big family. You will have new things to experience, apart from just sitting in class. There will be new experiences but the main objective of studying here is to be educated and to become an improved and enhanced version of yourselves. During campus life before you go out to work, you need to develop yourself, as once you step into the working world, the real ‘test’ of being part of society and community sets in”, Prof Ir Dr Lee said.

Wei Shan on the other hand, shared her educational journey in TAR UC and gave some advice to the new students. “Look forward to making new friends. Immerse yourself and embrace the UC life. Just being you is the best way you can be. I hope you will find success in whatever it is you choose to do,” Wei Shan advised.

Subsequently, students met up with their respective faculty deans for briefing. They were also introduced to their lecturers who would be teaching them. Apart from that, they were also given a briefing on campus life, PTPTN, safety awareness talk and many others, as well as a campus tour.

The week-long orientation also comprised various activities such as Student Support Workshop, Society Day, Adjustment to Campus Life Programme, Games and Sports and Kuala Lumpur tour.

Andersen Winkock from Indonesia who is pursuing the Diploma in Public Relations had much to say about the first day of the Orientation Week. “It is great and fun. I made new friends from different countries and faculties. I am proud to study in this esteemed university college and I am looking forward to gaining new experience,” he said.

Another freshie, Elizabeth Kavisha, a student of the Diploma in Food Science, also expressed her thoughts about the Orientation Week. “I found it to be quite organised. I was showed around campus during the campus tour and I am satisfied with everything,” she said.
