TAR UC Inks Collaborations To Support Railway Industry

TAR UC formalised three strategic collaborations on 13 June 2019 with the aim to train TAR UC Engineering students with specialised skills and knowledge for railway industry. In a signing ceremony, TAR UC signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Guangzhou Railway Polytechnic (GRP) and Guangdong Zhuoyue Qiancheng Education Services (BF), as well as a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with GRP and China Railway Dongfang Group (CREC) and another MoU with GRP and China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC) Railway Vehicles Sdn Bhd. TAR UC’s MoA with GRP and BF will provide TAR UC students who are studying either the Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Diploma in Mechatronic Engineering or Diploma in Electronic Engineering the option to also pursue GRP’s Diploma in Railway Locomotive. In addition, the MoU with CRRC and CREC will provide internship and job placement opportunities for TAR UC students who have opted to undertake GRP’s Diploma in Railway Locomotive. 

The Guest-of-Honour who graced the signing ceremony of the three agreements was Mr Chen Chen, Minister Counsellor – cum – Deputy Chief of Mission of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Malaysia. He was accompanied by Dato Sri’ Liow Tiong Lai, Chairman of the Board of Governors of TAR UC and Prof Ir Dr Lee Sze Wei, President of TAR UC together with other distinguished guests such as Mr Diao Ailin, Deputy Secretary General of GuangZhou Municipal People’s Government, Mr Ma Renting, President of GRP, Mr Tang Junjing, President of BF, Mr Qin Fuhua, Head of Human Resources Dept. & Head of Party Committee Organisation Dept of CREC and Mr Wu Bin, General Manager of CRRC Railway Vehicles (M) Sdn Bhd.

In his speech, Mr Chen Chen shared his aspirations for the collaborations. He said: “The collaborations pave the way for all parties to share resources in order to provide professional training for the growth of the rail industry and this will certainly enhance the economic development in both countries”.

In his welcome remarks, Dato’ Sri Liow highlighted that the collaborations were in line with TAR UC’s continuous efforts in supporting the government through the provision of highly skilled human capital. “TAR UC’s collaboration with GRP, BF, CREC and CRRC is in line with the nation’s aspiration to continue building and developing the rail industry in Malaysia. A robust transportation system is vital in strengthening a country’s economy and through these collaborations, TAR UC will continue to play its fundamental role in building the required human capital to develop the nation which has been our mission since inception in 1969,” he clarified.

Mr Diao Ailin, meanwhile highlighted in his speech the importance of the three collaborations. He said: “Joint education programs can inject impetus into the country's long-term development, offering talent urgently needed in its railway construction, particularly the East Coast Rail Line (ECRL) project, which delivers tangible benefits.”

Mr Ma Renting also shared his confidence for the collaboration in bringing benefits to all stakeholders. “I believe the cooperation of authorities, institutions, and companies from both sides will develop the talents needed in Malaysia’s rail industry, so as to support the development of the ECRL project in Malaysia,” he said.

Mr Tang Junjing in his speech shared his aspirations for the collaboration. “I hope that the students who have chosen to pursue this programme will acquire useful and rail-related skills and expertise which will enhance their chances of securing employments in the rail industry,” he said.

The TAR UC – GRP collaborative programme will be offered to the May 2019 intake Engineering Diploma students. They are required to complete 5 modules delivered by GRP lecturers in TAR UC within the first two years of their TAR UC Engineering Diploma programmes. In Year 3, students are required to go to GRP in Guangzhou, China for 6 months to complete another 6 modules and 4 months of industrial training. TAR UC students who have completed all the programme requirements will graduate with two qualifications, namely TAR UC’s Engineering Diploma and GRP’s Diploma in Railway Locomotive.
