Three TAR UMT teams were named among the top 10 winners in the inaugural eMOBIQ Challenge 2023 when the results were announced on 16 June 2023. This competition is the first-of-its-kind and largest no-coding app development competition organised by Wilstech Sdn Bhd and supported by the Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC). 127 teams from various higher education institutions in Malaysia took part in the competition.

One of the three teams from TAR UMT who took part in the competition is actually a solo participant, Ng Yong Hui who is pursuing her Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Psychology. Her app called ‘School Application’ aims to revolutionise traditional parent-teacher meeting sessions.

“My app allows tracking, analysing and reporting of children’s academic and non-academic progress in schools to give parents a comprehensive understanding of their children’s growth.

“I noticed that most parents only focus on their children’s academic performance, and may not be aware of their individual interests or talents outside the classroom. This gave me an idea to create an application that can give parents an overall view of their children’s true potential,” said Yong Hui.

The other two teams from TAR UMT who were among the top 10 teams were Dream 37 and TARUMT CPUS. Dream 37 consists of eight Bachelor of Software Engineering (Hons) students who developed a dental service and booking app called ‘Dreamtal’ while TARUMT CPUS’ app on smart inventory management is called ‘Store It’.

Ng Yin Xuan of Dream 37 shared what the team learnt in the competition: “It was a challenging experience, but competitions like this help us improve our problem-solving skills, boost our self-confidence and provide an opportunity to learn new things in a different setting.”

Meanwhile, TARUMT CPUS, was appreciative of the support and motivation from their lecturers.

“Even though our lecturers were unable to assist us during the development process, they kept us motivated and provided emotional support to help the team stay focused on the task at hand. We may have stepped out of our comfort zone, but it was a great learning experience for me and my teammates,” said Saw Khoo Zi Chong of TARUMT CPUS.
