Performing a programming task without any electronic gadget is unthinkable. But this was not the case for Lim Jian Han, a 2nd year Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Software Engineering student, when he emerged as the 1st Runner-up winner in the E-Genting Programming Competition (EGPC) 2015 which was held on 14 November 2015.

This annual competition seeks to test participants' problem solving and programming skills. What makes this competition challenging is that participants are only allowed to use pencils or pens to manually write the programming codes for as many questions they can attempt to complete on paper. As many as 150 undergraduates and professionals took part in the competition.

For Jian Han, this was his first programming competition he has taken part in. "Having to manually write the programming codes on paper was indeed challenging. My strategy was to ensure that I fully understood the questions before writing any codes. Then, I broke the problems into smaller problems and designed a solution for each of the problems," he explained in detail. Jian Han won a cash prize of RM3,000 and a certificate of achievement.

"One of the main aims of this competition is to expose students to real world programming problems as the questions in the competition are the types of problems that programmers have to solve at work. This is what we teach our students at TAR University College. We consistently ensure our curriculum syllabus constantly remain relevant to the industries as this will enable our students to manage and even exceed the demands of industries. Lim Jian Han's win testifies to this formula of academic excellence at TAR University College," Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR University College proudly commented.
