TAR UC’s team of marketing students, Bethany A/P Francis, Choi Chiun Shun and Lam Ming Zhen won the top prize in The Travel Store category in the Influencer Marketing Competition organised by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce held on 18 March 2018. This is the first time TAR UC has participated in such a competition.

The competition is held annually by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce to promote innovation amongst youth at undergraduate level. In this year’s competition, participating students were assigned the task of selling the luggage bags from The Travel Store at a special discounted rate and using social media and other digital-related methods to promote the products. Thus, TAR UC team created a video and an e-brochure for the promotion. The students were given a period of 2 weeks to sell the product. The students’ lecturers, Mr Loh Teck Hua, Senior Marketing Lecturer and mentor, and Ms Lim Wai Wai, who was also their social media advisor, helped guide and advise the students throughout the competition.

Bethany A/P Francis, the leader of the group spoke about the main motivation in achieving the win. “I felt that if we won, we would have a competitive advantage when we go out into the working world. It was also very interesting to learn how social media is used to impact the e-commerce world. Besides that, Mr Loh Teck Hua was ever-ready and supportive. He guided us step by step and allowed us to expand our horizon and contribute our ideas,” she said.

Choi Chiun Shun, on the other hand wanted to thank all the lecturers of the Marketing Department and the Faculty of Accountancy, Finance and Business as a whole for their support during the period of the competition.

Finally, Lam Ming Zhen, another member of the group had this piece of advice to share. “Always be not afraid to try new things. It is my first time participating in such a competition and I believe that the decision that I had made to participate in it will eventually help me in the future. It does not matter if I lose or win in this competition because in the end, I have gained the experience. Furthermore, have the courage to speak your mind. When we were brainstorming for ideas as a team, I bravely voiced out whatever ideas that came to my mind as I felt that it was my responsibility to provide an idea, whether it was accepted or not,” she enthused.

The team won a cash prize of RM 5,000 for their effort.
