TAR UC Students' Proposal is Top Choice

TAR UC team comprising Lee Chun Num (in red t-shirt), Lee Hen Yue (in brown t-shirt), Teoh Yi Young (in white collared shirt) and Darren Hii Xun Jie (in white t-shirt) were named as the first-place team during the virtual prize giving ceremony.

A team of TAR UC students won the first place for the Alcom Rescue Shelter Design Competition. The design competition was part of Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia Annual Architecture Student Works Exhibition (‘PAASWE’). The winners were announced during the virtual prize giving ceremony held on 19 December 2021 where the students won the cash prize of RM3,000.

The members of the winning team comprised Teoh Yi Young, Lee Chun Num, Lee Hen Yue and Darren Hii Xun Jie who are pursuing their Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Hons). They faced stiff competition from 15 other teams to be named as the top team. The team’s proposal which led to their victory is the floating emergency rescue shelter known as Pop Up Shelter. Their solution is to create a collapsible and transportable shelter that can be set up in half a day. The structure proposes using standard building materials available locally, including the use of aluminium building materials.

TAR UC also did well in the other students' works competitions and a number of TAR UC students were awarded a range of prizes from Jury’s Choice up to second placing. The students’ submissions were either works based on their architecture design studio projects or new works specifically created for PAASWE2021. Overall, the students appreciated the experience as it expanded their creativity outside of their classrooms, and were keen to share their experience with their younger counterparts planning to participate in PAASWE2022.
