A group of successful professionals who prefers to be identified as the Sekolah Menengah Sri Perhentian 1975 (‘SSP1975’) group visited TAR UC on 12 August 2016 to present scholarship cheques to three deserving TAR UC students. The representatives from SSP1975 who visited TAR UC were Mr Lee Kwong Yan, Ms Tammy Tan and Ms Peggy Tan. Ms Peggy Tan is also a TAR UC alumna who completed her A Level (Arts). Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR UC, was present to welcome the visitors to TAR UC.

Ms Peggy Tan was excited to visit TAR UC after a long time. “As compared to when I was studying here back in 1976, there are many more infrastructural developments for the benefit of the students like the Cyber Centre and the Sports Complex. This goes to show that TAR UC is committed to providing the best environment for students to pursue their education and recreational activities,” she said. She also explained the reason SSP1975 provided scholarships for TAR UC students. “The establishment of this group as well as financial assistance to deserving TAR UC students is the brainchild of Mr Hugh Koh Yu Soon, a member of SSP1975, who is also an alumnus of TAR UC. Besides this, as a teacher myself, I understand the difficulties a student can face due to financial constraints. As such, I immediately agreed to support Mr Hugh’s idea on providing financial assistance to deserving TAR UC students,” she explained in detailed.

As the members of SSP1975 originated from Pontian, Johor, one of the requirements for students to be eligible to receive financial assistance is that their hometown must be based in Pontian, Johor. As such, three TAR UC students from Pontian were selected to receive the financial assistance and they were Wee Ming Qiu, a Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) in Software Engineering student, Tay Ying Shan who is pursuing her Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Bioscience with Chemistry and Chua Shu Fen, a Bachelor of Social Science (Hons) in Psychology student.

“Although I am in my final year, I still face financial constraints in completing my studies. I am very grateful to SSP1975 for providing me with this scholarship which would be of great help in easing my financial burden,” Wee Ming Qiu gratefully said.

As for Tay Ying Shan, she commented: “I did not expect to be chosen as one of the scholarship recipients as I am a new student undergoing my first semester in TAR UC. Having said this, I feel very honoured to receive this scholarship as this gives me the confidence to excel in my studies”. Chua Shu Fen who is currently pursuing her 3rd semester in TAR UC, was very appreciative for the financial assistance she received. “I feel lucky to be chosen to receive this scholarship and this gives me the determination to do my best in my studies,” she added.
