On 23 - 24 July 2016, a trip to Penang was organised by the Photographic Society of TAR UC. Among the participants were 31 students from Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Hospitality, Business, Engineering, IT, Applied Science & Computing disciplines in Bachelor Degree and A Level programmes.

The group was led by 5 academics from the Department of Creative Arts, headed by Mr Tan Tay Guan, Graphic Design Programme Leader, who is the advisor of the Photographic Society Committee, together with other members consisting of Wilson Chong Chun Ho, Chairperson of the Society, Chew Zhan Hui, Vice Chairperson, Nurulnada Binti Zainuddin, Secretary, Robinson Soo Kuan Yee, Assistant Secretary, Tu Wei Seong, Treasurer, and Ng Ing Yeow, Committee Member.

“This is the second outing for the Photographic Society. This time we travelled to Penang covering cultural and heritage explorations of George Town. Students visited the Penang Camera Museum, where they were exposed to the historical evolution of antique cameras dated as far back as the 18th century," said Mr Tan.

The group spent two days and one night in George Town, Penang and were delighted by the painting of wall murals on antiquated buildings. These sites make an ideal spot for artistic photography. “Penang is known for its local street art by the well-known public artist, such as Ernest Zacharevic. Students had a chance to explore places like Little India, Clan Jetties, as they toured along the alleyways in George Town area, capturing photos featuring the wall arts and local street foods,” said Mr Tan.

The ultimate aim of this trip was to capture the cultural dynamics of the environment experienced by the students. Although the local heritage is largely broadcasted through the media, being physically there to experience the environment makes a lot of difference. Indeed it was an enriching learning experience.
