Aspiring TARCian Clinches Silver in Essay Competition

Chin Chee Suen, a TARCian currently pursuing his Foundation in Business, was awarded the Silver Award in the senior category of The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition (QCEC) 2023 on 24 October 2023. The QCEC is the oldest global writing contest for educational institutions and is continually expanding its impact on youth across the globe.

From the list of topics given in the competition, Chee Suen chose the topic  ‘Does Age Matter?’. It was an argumentative essay with the idea that, for a more progressive and less discriminatory world, age should not be the sole factor in evaluating an individual's worth or abilities. His writing explored how age can affect personal growth, physical health, and interpersonal relationships, while also highlighting the importance of considering other factors such as exposure, environment, and daily habits in assessing an individual's overall capabilities.

It was a surprising achievement for Chee Suen, as he shared: "I wasn't expecting anything at first, as I had joined the competition just to challenge myself. It wasn’t easy for me, as this was my first global competition and I had a difficult time finding relevant real-life examples to support my writing; however, upon learning that I had won the silver, I am truly proud and happy about this achievement,” he said.

The young achiever also gave credit to his advisor, Mr Teddy Nelson for his success in the essay competition. He mentioned that during times when he was stuck on a section or had difficulty finding relevant examples, Mr Teddy was always helpful in providing better perspectives and how to go about writing them.

Chee Suen looks forward to new challenges and has set his sights on the Writer’s Digest Annual Writing Competition. “The thrill of challenges keeps me on edge and I eagerly want to take them on. Moreover, for all aspiring writers like myself who wish to participate in competitions like this, my advice would be to practise writing daily, as it will help with your thought process and generate more creative ideas in your writing," he said.
