On 17 November 2016, students from the Creative Arts programme were invited for a study trip to manufacturing companies organised by the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (‘FMM’) and Women in Business Working Committee (‘WIB’).

14 students from the Bachelor of Design (Honours) in Graphic Design guided by Ms Tan Yarshi and Pn Nurulhuda Binti Zainudin, programme leaders from Graphic and Multimedia Design disciplines participated in the one-day tour to Royal Selangor International and Tenmoku Pottery manufacturing plants.

“The objective of the trip is to provide an insight to students about the manufacturing industry in Malaysia. This project is part of the FMM and WIB Corporate Social Responsibility (‘CSR’) initiative,” said Ms Florance Gabriel, Assistant Manager for Communications & Publications Unit of FMM.

The trip benefited TAR UC students as they were exposed to the pewter making processes at the Royal Selangor International, School of Hard Knocks. Insightful talk about the industry was shared with the students by Ms Penny Wong, FMM Women in Business Working Committee, and Mr Yong Yoon Li, Executive Director of Royal Selangor Pewter.

“This visit offers learning exposure as well as to draw students’ interest in pursuing a career within the manufacturing sector,”said Ms Penny Wong.

During the afternoon tour at Tenmoku Pottery, students tried their hand at pottery and attended a seminar conducted by Ms Michelle Oon, Executive Director of Tenmoku Pottery, where she talked about ceramic making process and the use of natural substance in art and craft.
