Campbell University Convocation Ceremony 2013


 

On 12 October 2013, the morning was greeted by students donning their graduation gowns and mortar boards in TAR University College Kuala Lumpur Main Campus. The atmosphere in the College Hall was suffused with jubilation and merriment as the students of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Computing were celebrating their convocation for having completed successfully their programmes leading to the attainment of the Bachelor of Science degrees from Campbell University, US.

A total of 421 students had successfully graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from Campbell University. The graduands had the honour to receive their scrolls from Dr Mark Hammond, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Campbell University, as well as Dr Dwaine Greene, President-Elect of Georgetown College and immediate past Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost, Campbell University.

During the convocation ceremony, Dr Mark Hammond, in his graduation address, congratulated TAR University College for having been properly and deservedly upgraded to University College.He also light-heartedly remarked to the graduands: “What’s new to me today is the pride I have for you as I pass the scroll and shake your hands”, expressing his heartfelt joy for the success of the students.

The convocation also celebrated the accomplishment of high-achieving students who had performed remarkably well in their studies with the presentation of Excellence Awards. Quah Shun Ying was awarded the Matthew Baillie Prize for Chemistry and Samuel Martin Brown Prize for Biology whereas Khor Cher Yin took the Dwight Lamar Norwood Prize for Mathematics. Chew Teong Hun and Chooi Kok Keong earned the Wallace Ewart Prize for Computer Science and Jerry McLain Wallace Prize for Information Systems respectively. Meanwhile, Lim Ke Zheong won the Prize for Microelectronics. The highest honour, the Perpetual Cup, was awarded to Tiew Kee Aun.

Kee Aun, who majors in Sport and Exercise Science, was not present to receive his prize as he was in UK to undertake his Masters programme in Sports Therapy. However, in an email interview, he expressed his utmost gratitude to his lecturers, seniors, sport coaches, his friends and family for their support throughout his studies that eventually led him to win the Perpetual Cup. He also rated the teaching in TAR University College highly and said: “I find the teaching methods at TAR University College very professional but fun at the same time. The Sport and Exercise Science lecturers taught me a lot not only through the syllabus but with their life experience as well. In my opinion, it is more important to explain how the things that we learn can be applied in real life situations and in this aspect, the lecturers did very well”. He went on to say that his studies in TAR University College prepared him well for his postgraduate studies. “The programme not only allowed me to learn the sport science theories but it taught me to be more hands-on and apply what I learnt in my Masters programme”.
