Based on its sterling track record in providing excellent education for more than 47 years, TAR UC is offering three postgraduate programmes at Master’s level. These programmes are Master of Business Administration (‘MBA’) which is a taught Master’s programme as well as the two research-based Master of Science programmes with focus on Physical Science and Life Science, all of which will commence in October 2016.

A grand launch of TAR UC’s postgraduate programmes and postgraduate library was held on 10 August 2016 at Block SB, East Campus to celebrate this joyous occasion and create awareness of these programmes and the new library. The event was graced by Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, President of TAR UC, who also officiated the launch of the postgraduate programmes and postgraduate library. In his speech, Datuk Dr Tan Chik Heok, spoke on the strategic preparation made by TAR UC particularly in research to roll out postgraduate programmes. “Since the upgrading to University College status in 2013, TAR UC wasted no time to set up a number of research centres to facilitate and intensify research activities as well as industry projects. There are in total 14 research centres that have been established in TAR UC,” he added.

Apart from the research centres, Datuk Dr Tan said that TAR UC also had taken many initiatives to strengthen its research capability and capacity. “To ensure the success of our research endeavour and further enhance the quality of our postgraduate programmes, TAR UC has put in place a strong academic and research eco-system. To this end, TAR UC had recruited more research-oriented academia, upgraded the laboratories and equipment to strengthen our research capability and capacity, to recruit postgraduate students and research assistants and also, to build a conducive research and postgraduate physical learning space that is the postgraduate library that we are launching today,” he continued.

After the speech, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony to launch the postgraduate library. The new 24-hour library will start operations in October 2016 and it serves as a self-service library for postgraduate students and lecturers. At the library, there are two self-service machines for the borrowing and returning of books, called the RFID self-check station and RFID book drop station. There are also 24 internet PCs and 2 kiosk PCs. Besides that, there are round-the-clock self-services such as, online renewals and online holds, self-service photocopying, social OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) – one stop access to search books and more. Apart from that, the library contains a wealth of resources in terms of books, journals, CDs, DVDs, theses and online databases.

The UC also has a scheme in place to help postgraduate students financially, to support their studies and living expenses. The postgraduate student could do a tutoring job while they study, or could apply to be a Research Assistant or obtain mymaster or myPhd government grants. Applicants with distinction in Bachelor’s degree could also apply for the UC scholarship to do the Master by research programmes with TAR UC.

In the near future, there will be another 11 Master’s in the pipeline, both by taught and research programmes, and 6 new Doctorate programmes to be offered from 2017 till 2019.
