TAR UC once again was privileged to host another successful TEDx TAR UC event with the theme ‘The Power of You”. Organised by the Centre for Pre-University Studies, the event was held on 30 July 2016 at the Auditorium of Kuala Lumpur Main Campus.

The story behind TED conferences goes back to 1984 when it was first organised as a one-off conference. Six years down the road, TED conference which focused on the areas of technology, entertainment and design became an annually held conference. These series of conferences were seen as a platform to promote ideas and these ideas were presented in short yet inspiring talks. As TED conferences continue to garner overwhelming response year after year, the scope of the conferences has widen to cover almost any topics from science, to business and global issues. TEDx on the other hand are independently organised TED events organised by local communities or organisations and serves as a platform to share ideas and inspiring stories.

TEDx TAR UC 2016 attracted approximately 100 participants ranging from TAR UC students, staff and members of the public. Assoc Prof Dr Ng Swee Chin, Vice President of TAR UC, was present to officially launch the event. “Today, international brands and multinational corporations are no stranger to us. Nurturing a global mindset is key to make our mark as we have the opportunity to bring the world into our university college. As such, TEDx has become our channel for intellectual dialogue and to play a part in curating ‘ideas worth sharing’ in this era of information overload,” Assoc Prof Dr Ng said in her welcoming speech.

A total of 10 speakers presented their subject of interest at the event. Among them was Mr Brian See who is a fashion and style influencer as well as a model. The title of his talk was ‘Aspire to Inspire’ where he talked about how his deep passion for fashion transformed him into becoming a digital influencer in the world of fashion. Among the other speakers who presented included Ms Maggie Chong, a cancer survivor, Mr Cody “Coex” Foo, a performer, emcee and audio engineer and Ms Aemy Wong, a life planner for bereavement care. Ms Tan Yarshi, a lecturer from the Faculty of Social Science, Arts and Humanities was another speaker for the day. She spoke about her deep passion for arts and design and she even showcased some of her artwork which she did during her schooling days. Another lecturer from the Centre for Pre-University Studies who presented on the world of TRIZ was Mr Keong Chee Sheng.

Bok Chia Hoi and Ng Jia Qi, students from the A Level Science programme were very thankful for the experience they had gained from helping out at the event. “This is my second time to volunteer at the TEDx TAR UC event and the reason I volunteer myself again is because I gained invaluable experience in the previous event. It is also encouraging to see that the event continues to gain support from the TAR UC community, which goes to show that TEDx TAR UC is an excellent platform for exchange of ideas and inspiring stories,” Jia Qi said.
