Creativity and ingenuity is the hallmark of TAR University College students, especially for five Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Broadcasting students, for winning the Best Digital Documentary Film at the Malaysian Digital Film 2015 Competition. The award ceremony was held at FINAS on 24 November 2015.
The 3rd year students who are from the pioneer batch of TAR University College’s Broadcasting Degree programme are Khiew Chi Yen, Ler Chai Xia, Lee Ai Mei, Koo Shu Meen and Lai Git Yan who produced the winning documentary entitled ‘The Boo Legend’.
Based on a true fact in Malaysia, ‘The Boo Legend’ showcases the life story of a bamboo basket maker who started this profession since he was 14 years old and the stiff competition he faces now due to the development of the plastic industry.
Asked on why the story of a bamboo basket maker was chosen, Khiew Chi Yen, the project director explained: “This project was actually my coursework assignment. I was very interested documenting this story as this once lucrative and traditional profession is dying out and I wanted to capture as much of the bamboo basket maker’s knowledge, experience and thoughts in the best way possible, through a documentary!”
The team won a trophy and a certificate. There were over 200 participations, ranging from industry professionals, student film makers and the public, which is in line with FINAS’s aspiration to encourage more locals to produce films, so as to bring locally-produced films to greater heights.
